Kwabena, yeah it may work as a way to illustrate the different flavors and techniques of colonization and colonial administration and as a way of demonstrating the legacies and contemporary implications of a particularly unorthodox colonial administrative intervention.
Pablo, if the undergraduate course is a seminar, it may work. I was mindful of that when I was writing. You're right about potential intellectual wahala, but as you know if we worried too much about that we wouldn't publish on many topics. I have a ready escape from any wahala that may arise: I'll just say I was just trying to write a history that has not been documented, to fill a small gap in the historiography of colonial Nigeria. Nice to hear about your dad's extensive sojourn in colonial Northern Nigeria and his friendship with Bala Miller, the northern music icon from Zaria. We only heard stories of his exploits and watched his shows on TV when we were growing up. Your dad's observation of colonial Hausaization is spot on and is a major strand of the book. Without feigning modesty, I'd say that what "Mo" observed is well known to those from, or who study, Northern Nigeria, so even though I'd like to say I've discovered something new, the truth is that I really just put the usual scholarly shakara and spin on a phenomenon whose provenance and legacies are already fairly familiar to those with eyes and ears to the ground in Northern Nigeria. I won't hesitate to cite and hide behind your dad's contemporaneous colonial observation, as conveyed by you, if I'm confronted with too much wahala on the book -:). Your dad was obviously an eye witness to, and keen observer of, many epochal developments and periods in Nigerian and world history. I hope you got many stories out of him before he passed.
