RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Queen Elizabeth, Lugard, Zik, 97 others bag Nigeria's Centenary awards

More interesting is Diran's names of Nigerians who have not made the Awards' Roster. One may only imagine who would have made the Award Roster, and who would not have if Diran was in charge. Thank goodness he was not in charge.  It is beginning to bother me that some forum participants cannot see past their noses.

Very interesting indeed!

The man who made the first indigenous film of independent Nigeria, Kongis's Harvest, based on Soyinka's play of same title, Francis Oladele is omitted. The man who brought Nigerian theatre to international limelight, late Duro Ladiipo is missing. The man who midwifed the Nigeria cinema era, Ola Balogun is not in the list. The man who spearheaded what became Nollywood, a Yoruba theatre practitioner, Late Alade Aromire is omitted and we have Kenneth Nnebue who came 4 years after him to be honored. The man who routed Biafra, Gen. Benjamin Adekunle "Black Scorpion" is not on the list. And so many other names...

It must be a hoax indeed!

Shalom!

Diran

This is interesting indeed. First why was the list limited to 100 knowing fully well that it could limit the choices we have to make. Ifejuna l think was the first Nigerian to win a medal for the country. You are right about the Kid but even worse is that no civil servant of the first or second generation were found worthy to be honoured. People like Simon Adebo, Allison Ayida Jerome Udoji. I can't also believe that people like Profs Adedayo Adedeji, Aboyade Cole, Billy Dudley are not on the list so also Rev Father Dennis Slatary, Adebaju and Amachere . These last three deserve recognition for the foundation they laid for our football

Where are Hogan "Kid" Bassey (boxing), Sir Louis Nwachukwu Mbanefo (law), and Jaja of Opobo (entrepreneurship; resistance to colonialism; governance)?

Please go through this list and chuckle or weep. Supreme irony, Professor Wole Soyinka will be sharing the stage with the ghost of Sani Abacha in an "awards" ceremony. Who'd have thunk it? LOL!

Out of 100 "great people" Nigeria could only find EIGHT women, two foreign, to honor. Sick country.

British monarch and Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II, is to be conferred with an award on Friday, February 28, by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to mark Nigeria's centenary.

On the same day too, Sir Fredrick Lugard, who effected the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates of the British Crown to form a new colonial territory and his consort, Dame Flora Louise Shaw, who named the territory 'Nigeria' would both receive posthumous awards.

At the glittering ceremony, President Jonathan would similarly present awards in 13 other categories to 97 distinguished personalities, either alive or dead, who eminently symbolize the tapestry of Nigeria's first centenary.

In a statement, the Presidential Committee on Nigeria's Centenary Celebrations said the award ceremony scheduled to hold at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja, would kick off at 7.00pm.  A full list of the award recipients is reproduced below.
