That Adichie interview is proxy for Nigerian journalism, mediocrity Inc., housing the lazy and greedy, no substance.
It was kind of Adichie to grant that interview; the questions were lazy, shallow, back of envelope crap. She should be more discriminating.
But then, Adichie's interview was unfortunate, it reminds us that much of activism in Africa is mimicry, with the West as the asymptote, no context.
Like many African thinkers, Adichie is good at lectures, but poor at respectful dialogue. She grants interviews expecting them to be fawning.
Adichie has every right to a relationship on her own terms and in her father's name like everyone else. The lecture should have ended there.
Adichie's fix reminds us that African thinkers should inhale and rethink a desired strategic direction for Africa. Mimicry is not working.
Adichie, you are Ms. She is Mrs. So? You are both awesome people wearing alien labels like lipstick, nothing African there. Enjoy life jor.
Adichie. Hair, natural or weave on? Ms. or Mrs.? Who cares? Let Pa Achebe's words ring in our ears: We shall all live. We pray for life, children, a good harvest and happiness. You will have what is good for you and I will have what is good for me. Let the kite perch and let the eagle perch too. If one says no to the other, let his wing break. Ugo belu, Egbe belu...
I have said my own. Oya read the interview here...
