RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - THE "AFRICAN NATIONAL TEAMS" AT THE WORLD CUP

Family,

It will take me a while to get over the deplorable state of African soccer. The most embarrassing were Cameroon and Ghana, especially Ghana which exposed the rotten and corrupt nature of the management. Well, they say that FIFA is ‘investigating’ the alleged match fixing story involving the Ghanaian coach and some soccer investors. Then the fight between a Ghanaian player and the GFA representative. I hear Hollywood is planning a movie about the Ghanaian incidence.   I am a bit depressed now and I will need a couple of days to recover.  The consolation I take from the world cup so far is that at least Algeria did not go out without a fight.  Yes, they gave the Germans a massive fight. Way to go, Algeria!!

Subject: USA Africa Dialogue Series - THE "AFRICAN NATIONAL TEAMS" AT THE WORLD CUP

Family,

I suspect I am the only one who is feeling disheartened  about  the  “football”  that the  teams from the African continent  have put on display at this year’s World Cup. It is possible, highly possible, in my view, that by  the  end of today, there will be no African team left  in the tournament.  It was Cameroon, then  Ivory Coast  (my hope for glory), then Ghana (my country of birth) , now Nigeria (the champions of Africa and the home country of some of my best friends in the world) .  Could Algeria  be  motivated by the  memory of 1982 to beat Germany this evening and protect the  image and integrity of “African football”?  But, it is another African team, and I am not too hopeful, but remain prayerful.

Might we begin concluding that  “African football”,  for want of a better description, is  at a  very low state, if one  compares what Mexico, Colombia, and  Costa Rica put on display and what the African national teams have so far presented.  Many of the non-African teams  make good use of their  corner kicks, but the African teams  mess up theirs and even concede goals from them. Remember Ghana? And, today, Nigeria.

I do not receive the thousands of dollars that these players get from “appearance fees.”  As a spectator of African descent, my  compensation is  the  emotional outcome of watching  the teams from my heritage site.  When  they win,  my spirits are  high, and when  they  put  out the product that I have seen, so far, it makes me wonder whether, from a comparative global soccer perspective,  the  state of football in Africa or the conditioning of African teams  in global sports  have hit the lowest  of the low. Don’t tell me Spain is out, England is out, Italy is out. For me , and the emotions of the sport,  the African national teams deserve  national reevaluation of  what  they produced in Brazil. There is something sorely lacking in African football.

This tournament is also a crucible for forging  proud identities, making bold statements, and  lifting up spirits.  I was  alive when  Italia 90 came and passed, and all the  African students I knew in my little corner in Canada  felt very Cameroonian, whether they came from Ghana, Sierra Leone,  Zambia or elsewhere on the continent.  This year,  I have never felt so  spent in spirit as I watch the African teams  wilt and wither.

USA Africa Dialogue Series - The Battle of the Predicting World Cup Pundits Continues.....{ Re: COMPREHENSIVE SCORE CARD>>LINED UP PUNDITS' PICKS FOR WC KNOCKOUT STAGE.

My People:

Africa is out......Nigeria was fooled into thinking that soccer was only one half, not a game of two halfs...our set pieces were woefully taken.....our defence periodically panicky....our offense did not (like France and Germany do) look for that last person who could be better placed to score....Moses too often on the ground complaining....Odemwigie actually caused the second goal, not Yobo (arising from a needlessly and carelessly caused corner kick), and periodically tried to be pretty even in defence...

Algeria "tried", but time ran out...it would have won in extra extra time...

Anyway,  two more games for this round....too close to call who will win among these five Naijawave pundits, because none of them has called the two remaining games exactly alike - except the two "friends" Aluko and Ezebuihe (Argentina, USA) and Deno Lee and Aduba (Switzerland, Belgium), with Otuonye calling it Argentina, Belgium....

By the way, Ezebuihe is the only pundit that got it 100% predictions today...France, Germany....congratulations to him, immediately after two disastrous predictions....

We shall see on Tuesday....

1.  The game is still wide open between myself and Otuonye; it hangs on the match between Belgium and USA

2.  If Nigeria beats France today, Ezebuihe is out of the race with me; I will come out ahead of him since the rest of our predictions are identical. In fact, he might be entirely out of the race at that point - or already!

3,  No matter what happens in the remaining matches, Aduba will come out ahead of Deno Lee; their predictions are identical.

4,  The price of winning is a trip to the next World Cup in Russia, courtesy the LAST of the predicters! :-)

And there you have it.

A.  PICKS BY VIN "KOOL BREEZE" OTUONYE

Brazil over Chile
Colombia over Uruguay
Netherlands over Mexico
Costa Rica over Greece
Nigeria over France
Germany over Algeria
Argentina over Switzerland
AND
Belgium over USA

--------------------------------------------

B.  PICKS BY COLLINS EZEBUIHE

1.   Brazil  Vs Chile
Brazil has chilled Chile multiple times in the past. Today the Brazilians will again deep freeze Chile in Thermocool refrigerator. Pick: Brazil

RESULTBrazil won as I predicted.

2.   Colombia   Vs   Uruguay
Ouch, Luis Suarez took out his Uruguay team in a very biting manner! Pick: Colombia.
RESULT: Colombia won as I predicted.

3.     Netherlands   Vs    Mexico
A lot of people, including a Very Confused Professor turned Sports pundit in the Niger Delta of Nigeria,  have already crowned the Netherlands among the 2014 Knockout stage winners. Those folks better take Doan's pills for a sure to come upset stomach after this game. Pick: Mexico.
RESULT: Netherlands won, contrary to my prediction.

4.       Costa Rica   Vs    Greece
Heck, I always liked Phidipides the Greek runner. Today, his countrymen will "win one for the Gipper." Pick: Greece.

5.      France    Vs      Nigeria
It is truly better to be lucky than to be good. May be Jonathan should reward the Referee in that Nigeria-Bosnia-Hez game with an oil block.
Pick: France

6.       Germany    Vs     Algeria
These Germans will likely score 2 goals in the first half, in time to put in Miraslov Klose to get his 16th WC goal to stay in front of Ronaldo as the scoring champion. Pick: Germany.

7.   Argentina    Vs    Switzerland
After the Argentina-Nigeria game, Lionel Messi's grandfather chastised his grandson for playing soft. Well, Messi will work to make the old man happy with this one and also prove that Argentine girls are sweeter than Swiss girls. Otitigbe, I love cha cha! Pick: Argentina.

8.       Belgium     Vs      USA
Leopold might roll over in his grave today. Pick: USA
------------------------------------

C. PICKS BY SIR DENO LEE

Brazil Vs. Chile...................Brazil

Switzerland Vs. Argentina....Switzerland.
Argentina has not really impressed me. Yes Messi has done good but the team is just average. The Swiss have a formidable attack that will trouble the Argies back line.

France Vs. Nigeria.................France unless an all out attacking match with Nigeria winning 3-2 or 4-3. Anything less than a total of 3 goals scored and France wins.

U.S.A. Vs. Belgium...............Belgium once big boys step up. If they continue to play as group stage, USA will win 2-1 or 1-0.

Nertherlands Vs. Mexico...... Mexico will win. The massive support will see them through.

Costa Rica Vs. Greece..........Costa Rica will win 2-0 or 3-1. Only way Greece can win is if they score first then pack the bus.

Uruguay Vs. Colombia......... Colombia will win that match.
--------------------------------------------------

D.  PICKS BY VC BOLAJI ALUKO

1.  Brazil plays Chile...................Saturday, June 28, 5 pm......VC Aluko prediction: Brazil wins
2.  Colombia plays Uruguay.......Saturday, June 28, 9 pm.....VC Aluko prediction: Colombia wins
3,  Netherland plays Mexico.......Sunday, June 29, 5 pm.......VC Aluko prediction: Netherland wins <==========
4.  Costa Rica plays Greece......Sunday, June 29, 9 pm.........VC Aluko prediction: Greece wins
5.  France plays Nigeria..............Monday, June 30, 5 pm.....VC Aluko prediction:  Nigeria wins <============
6.  Germany plays Algeria...........Monday, June 30, 9 pm.....VC Aluko prediction: Germany wins
7.  Argentina plays Switzerland..Tuesday, July 1, 5 pm.........VC Aluko prediction: Argentina wins
8.  Belgium plays USA.................Tuesday, July 1, 9 pm .......VC Aluko prediction:  USA wins

But to my surprise, what do we now have from Collins Ezebuihe?

1.   Brazil  Vs Chile.........................Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Brazil
2.   Colombia   Vs   Uruguay.........Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Colombia.
3.   Netherlands   Vs    Mexico.......Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Mexico. <==============
4.   Costa Rica   Vs    Greece..........Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Greece.
5.   France    Vs      Nigeria.............Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: France <===============
6.   Germany    Vs     Algeria..........Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Germany.
7.   Argentina    Vs    Switzerland...Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: Argentina.
8.  Belgium     Vs      USA...............Very Crazy Ezeb(f)(w)uihe Picks: USA

It is only a crazy fellow that will predict Netherlands over Mexico, or some other country over his own....unless of course he has disowned his own country, which is not impossible, the way he writes.

USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: World Cup 2014: Nigeria boycott training in money row

Are our governments and sports officials failing our national soccer teams? The Black Stars had the same problem of non-payment of bonus money(see below). Some of the players demanded the payment of appearance fee of $70, 000 per player. This led to altercation between some players and officials. As a result, Sulley Muntari, the mid-fielder, slapped an official of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The GFA sacked Muntari from the team. In fact, the players demanded to be paid "hard cash" before resuming training for the match against Portugal.  President John Mahama had to intervene via phone from Ghana. Eventually "raw" cash of 3 million dollars had to be airlifted to Brazil to pay each of the players $70,000 dollars. There is no doubt that these distractions compromised the ability of the Blacks Stars to focus on the task ahead. May be Nkrumah was wrong after all: the Black "man" cannot manage his own affairs.

World Cup 2014: Nigeria boycott training in money row By Ian Hughes BBC Sport The Nigeria squad at the World Cup have missed a scheduled training session in a row over bonus money.

BBC Sport understands the players believe they are each $15,000 (£8,800) short of what they were expecting for reaching the last 16 in Brazil.

They refused to train in Campinas on Thursday and officials later confirmed the session had been cancelled.

Nigeria are scheduled to play France in the knockout stages on Monday having finished as runners-up in Group F.

BBC Sport has learned the problem lies in the interpretation of the bonus structure, with the players believing they will only receive $10,000 for their win 1-0 over Bosnia-Hercegovina and $5,000 for the 0-0 draw with Iran.

The players' understanding was they would receive a $30,000 payment for qualifying from the group.

However, it is believed the Nigerian Football Federation's offer to the players includes the agreed win and draw bonuses plus 30% of the prize money due from Fifa for reaching the knockout stage.

This is understood to rise to 40% of the prize money from Fifa if Nigeria were to win their round of 16 match, 50% for a quarter-final victory, 60% for a win in the semi-final stage and 70% for lifting the trophy.

While all parties work to find a resolution to the misunderstanding, coach Stephen Keshi has insisted it will not affect the team's performance.

And it has been confirmed to the BBC that the players will travel to Brasilia on Friday as scheduled and will train in the evening and over the weekend.

It is not the first time the Super Eagles have made a stance over money - last year they arrived late for the Confederations Cup in Brazil
