ELECTION NEWS.....

476,870 voters for today's election – INEC

Meanwhile, the INEC has said that it expects a total of 476,870 voters to participate in today's election in Ekiti State.

Addressing newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Halilu Pai, said the distribution of permanent voter cards to the Ekiti electorate represented about 65 per cent of those that registered, which was given as 732,166 as contained in the voter registers.

Pai said 16 INEC commissioners had been deployed to help in conducting an acceptable election that would be a pride of all, and said that the results of the election would be announced in Ekiti, contrary to fear that it would be announced in Abuja.

He said the commission had made adequate preparations for hitch-free election, and that the commission would have a good and meritorious outing in the poll.
Pai said a total of 1,900 local and foreign observers had been accredited to monitor the election, saying this was an indication that INEC had nothing to hide.

"We received the sensitive materials on Wednesday from the Central Bank of Nigeria, and with party representatives, escorted the materials to local government areas. These materials include the ballot papers and result sheets.

"They have been distributed to 57 super registration centres. This is an improvement to ensure that election starts on time. The places are strategically located across Ekiti State. These centres are close to the units to make the commencement of election faster and to make election materials available to personnel on time."

He said a total of 7,941 ad hoc staff, drawn from the National Youth Service Corps and other relevant agencies, would be working in the election.

Pai said that to make voting easier, additional 68 points have been established, thereby increasing the number of voting points in the state to 2,803," he said.
