Job Description

The Geography Department at Durham University seeks to employ a full-time postdoctoral Research Associate (RA) for a period of two years to carry out research as part of the DemandAT project, 'Addressing Demand in Anti-Trafficking Efforts and Policies.' The project, funded under the EU Seventh Framework Programme, investigates the approaches of anti-trafficking initiatives and policies seeking to reduce 'demand.' The RA will work on the study led by Durham University to identify and analyze existing and proposed efforts to address 'demand' for trafficking and forced labour in the context of complex supply chains and production networks.

The RA will join Durham University's Department of Geography, one of the leading centres of geographical research and education in the world. The RA will: contribute to the development of an appropriate methodological framework for the study; carry out data collection, likely to include international fieldwork; collaborate on data analysis; and assist in coordinating the advisory board for the study. The RA will also: attend meetings and other activities of the overall DemandAT project; present aspects of the study at academic conferences; and contribute to / initiate scholarly and policy-oriented publications resulting from the project. The successful candidate will have considerable opportunity to develop his/her publication profile.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have an interest in advancing innovative methodologies in the study of Global Production Networks. Interest in debates around forced labour, trafficking and contemporary 'slavery' and related topics would also be helpful.

The RA should expect to attend a project-wide meeting in Bremen from the 15th to 18th of September. 2014. This is a two-year, fixed-term appointment. We encourage women and ethnic minority candidates and others who are under-represented in higher education to apply.

This position requires travelling nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities

Person Specification

Essential
• A PhD in geography or a related discipline (or nearly completed PhD), or equivalent professional experience
• Initiative and an ability to work to deadlines without day-to-day supervision
• Excellent writing and communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team

Desirable
• Experience working with civil society partners
• Experience evaluating public policy and/or corporate social responsibility initiatives
• Experience working in cross-cultural contexts
• Experience in designing and conducting international research
• A strong publication record
• Experience in developing innovative methodologies
• Interest in advancing the Global Production Network framework or cognate frameworks for analysing the political economy of supply chains
• Interest in debates around forced labour, trafficking, contemporary 'slavery' and related issues
• Experience working in languages other than English
