Boko Haram not behind Buhari assassination attempt – Junaid Mohammed

A member of northern delegates at the National Conference, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has accused desperate Abuja politicians for the attempted assassination of General Muhammadu Buhari through bomb blast in Kaduna on Wednesday.

Also former Governor of Bayelsa State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC),Timipre Sylva, said on Thursday that the shoddy handling of insurgency in the country by the President Goodluck Jonathan had given rise to frequent attacks by Boko Haram insurgents.

Gen. Buhari on Wednesday escaped assassination attempt on his way to Daura, Katsina State when car which was trailing him from behind detonated the bomb at Kawo Kaduna and killed many people.

Mohammed exonerated members of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgency from the incident.

"It is wrong for anybody to blame Boko Haram for the attack on Gen. Buhari and Sheikh Bauchi in Kaduna on Wednesday," he said.

Mohammed who was a member of the House of Representatives in the Second Republic further revealed that he was privy to information some months ago that there was a grand design by politicians that rigged out Buhari twice in the presidential elections to eliminate him before the 2015 elections.

He warned that those who think they can eliminate him from the 2015 race through assassination and not through the ballot will murder sleep and plunge the country to anarchy if anything happens to Buhari before the election.

But the former chairman of Lagos State All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and chieftain of APC, Chief Abiodun Oyebolu, stated that even though it is difficult to name those behind the dastardly act, the security aides attached to Buhari should be investigated.

"How did the attackers know that Buhari was travelling to his home town on that particular date and time? It is a question that is begging for an answer which full investigation will unravel," he said.

Oyebolu said the attack could be the handiwork of Boko Haram members because of the threat from the group to attack General Buhari, IBB and some notable figures in the country.

I "read some a report some times ago that members of Boko Haram listed some prominent figures from the north to be attacked including Buhari and IBB for supporting democracy in the country," he said.

Sylva said the insurgents were now riding roughshod on the country and its hapless citizens.

In a statement by his media adviser, Doifie Buokoribo, he stated that last Wednesday's attack on the convoy of the former Head of State and national leader of the APC, Mohammadu Buhari, was just another case in point.

Condemning the attack, Sylva said "the apparent assassination attempt on Buhari is a spineless assault on the voice of conscience in Nigeria by bigoted terrorists and their political sponsors seeking evil attention".

He insisted that Nigerians were being frustrated with the Federal Government's inability to tackle the menace of insurgency.
