USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Boko Haram: Over five churches burnt down, insurgents threaten to destroy Council Secretariat

Definitions of the right to freedom of thought and religion

Are we so used to  hearing this kind of bad news that we are developing some immunity to the shock reaction at earlier reports. Should the churches that are within the radius of Boko Haram's field of operations, not be provided with some security? Shouldn't soldiers be deployed to guard the churches?

These past couple of years, with the almost weekly news reports of Boko Haram burning down churches one wonders how many churches are there in their target area - how many churches were there and how many churches are left after Boko Haram's criminal acts of wanton arson, and how many churches will remain if Boko Haram continues like this? (Is it that in their eyes President Goodluck Jonathan who is a Christian is a symbol of churches and therefore these attacks on churches? Of course if they want to set up an Islamic state the Caliph will be a Muslim, and not anyone else.

Side question: (Adekunle Ignoramus wants to know): This business about the rotation of the presidency and the North saying "Now it's the North's turn" - does "North" here equate to Muslim? Is that what it's all about? If the Islamic caliphate of Northern Nigeria comes into being (with or without a war) at least they won't have that kind of problem - the Caliph/ Sultan/ Emir will always be a Muslim. They won't have that kind of problem but they will probably have other kinds of problems

Boko Haram's genocidal intentions and their systematic terror murder and arson are all the more surprising in the light of the Quran which states that Christians are closest in affection to Muslims:

"And thou wilt find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe (to be) those who say: Lo! We are Christians. That is because there are among them priests and monks, and because they are not proud." (Surat Al-Ma'idah : 82 )

No fewer than five churches in Kwajaffa, Tashan Alade and other communities in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno were on Wednesday set ablaze by suspected members of the Boko Haram terrorists.

Hawul, a predominantly Christian community in southern part of the state also shares local boundary with Garkida town of Adamawa State, which came under attack by some group of insurgents last Sunday.

They killed 2 soldiers and three civilians and set ablaze a Police station.

Hawul, which is about 30 kilometres to Biu Local Government Area and 220 kilometres drive from Maiduguri, the state capital, is witnessing series of attacks by terrorists.

They are suspected to have formed their camps aroung Zhur, Pelachiroma and Kwajaffa hills and valleys.

DailyPost gathered that the gunmen invaded the affected communities on Wednesday night targeting only churches, using Improvised Explosive Devices and petrol bombs to set them ablaze.

It was also gathered that the gunmen after destroying the churches, told some residents that their next target was to go and set ablaze the Local Government Secretariat in Hawul.

Although no life was lost, the gunmen operated freely without confrontation from either residents or security operatives.

The Caretaker Chairman of Hawul Local Government Area, Dr. Andrew Usman Malgwi confirmed the burning of churches in some of his communities as well as the threats that "the Council Secretariat will be the next target of the terrorists".

He explained that the insurgents have now shifted their deadly attacks and destruction to Hawul, and therefore called on the Government and security agencies to immediately deploy troops to safeguard lives and property of innocent citizens.
