RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - boko haram again

This present conflict reminds me of the 19th century rift between the Hausa - Fulani supporters of Usman dan Fodio and the Kanuri
leadership that challenged their authority. Al-Kanemi comes to mind. There is an ethnic and religious divide within the northeast.
It may also be a turf war between fundamentalist Islam on the Niger/ Nigerian borders and beyond, and the expanding evangelical
Christian recruits in the area, some of whom are Kanuri. Add to this the fact that unemployed youth and the dispossessed are easy to recruit.
We have here an intersection of ethnicity, class and religion, compounded by fratricidal conflict within Islam and a political elite
preoccupied with the capture of state power for the purpose of surplus appropriation.

I maybe wrong on this and certainly look forward to additional insights from the experts.

True. Misappropriation of funds for defence is surely an issue vis a vis the poor performance of the military,
as Ikhide points out.

thanks gloria. i can't help wonder why it seems so little is known about
bh's resources. and i can't help but wonder what sets them off so much
from other muslims up north to the point where they are actually enemies.
