It is about time that the Academy Award system acknowledged African film makers.
That moment has arrived.
Rostov Luanda was one of Sissako's early films - looking at the impact of the cold war on Africa,
the sustained conflict in Angola, and reaction from Angolan citizens. There is a bit about
Portuguese assimilation in the country. I notice that this film is omitted in
most of the filmographies about him on- line, but it was a great pioneering film.
Bamako was hard hitting on the IMF and another great production.
I shall soon look at Timbuktu.
