whereas timbuktu was a good film, it was not my favorite of his work. for that, i would say La Vie sur terre (Life on earth) is maybe the most beautiful african film (for me), and more compelling overall was Heremakhono, his earlier film. Timbuktu is timely, well put together, with much to commend it. glad it is being recognized, of course. but it would take a revolution for hollywood to recognize the power and subtlety of Heremakkono
if anyone is looking for a recommendation, i'd say, go to La vie sur terre. it is incomparably beautiful, subtle, smart, and infused with the glorious words and thoughts of cesaire.

It is about time that the Academy Award system acknowledged African film makers.

That moment has arrived.

 

Rostov Luanda was one of Sissako's early films -  looking at the impact of the cold war on Africa,

the sustained conflict  in Angola, and reaction from  Angolan citizens. There is a bit about

Portuguese assimilation in the country. I notice that this film is omitted in

most of the filmographies about him on- line,  but it was a great pioneering film.

 

Bamako was hard hitting on the IMF and another great production.

 

I shall soon look at Timbuktu.
