Dear All:
It is one thing to postpone the elections because
of security issues and the state of unpreparedness
of INEC to conduct the elections; it would be out of the ordinary
and a gargantuan error of judgement if the rumor of an impending sack
(or forced resignation) of Prof. Attahiru Jega were to come true.
Such a move on the part of President Jonathan would be reckless
as he would not only be rolling the dice, he would also be fiddling with
a ticking time bomb!
Even though President Jonathan was once quoted to have said that the Presidential elections
are not a do or die affair for him, It would appear that he might be tempted by
his advisers (for whom survival in office
is a do or die affair) to make the risky move of tampering with the elections.
Changing the referee in the middle of a tournament to get a desired result from a more
friendly referee usually never goes down well with either the opposing team or the
spectators who have paid to watch the soccer game!
Just as the "third term agenda" failed during the late stages of OBJ's second tern
in office, any unscrupulous attempts by the Presidency to interfere with
the conduct and or adulterate the results of the 2015 Presidential elections would certainly
not go down well with the overwhelming majority of Nigerians at home and abroad.
I am hopeful that President Jonathan has enough emotional intelligence to make
the right decisions for posterity--not only for himself but in fact for all Nigerians.
The President has a choice and a decision to make:
He could either allow INEC to conduct free and fair elections and let the chips fall
where ever they may, or he could chose to rig the elections to prolong his stay in power for another
four years.
The choice he makes will determine whether or not he wants to be remembered as a President
who despite having led a government that by most objective accounts, both domestic and international,
has failed woefully to improve the livelihood of the
tens of millions of Nigerians in 6 years, could still be celebrated for having the decency to concede defeat and gracefully
step aside (if in fact he is defeated) in the elections now postponed to March 28 or he could chose to be remembered
as the last President of a United Nigeria!
The wise democratic leader would let the people decide; the unwise ones end up like Laurant Gbagbo of Cote de'Voire
in a foreign prison after unfortunately unleashing needless bloodbath on their peoples in hopeless attempts to hang on to power
by all means possible.
Let us hope and pray that President Jonathan will do the right thing! Deep down in my heart, I still believe he is a decent
human being who would be inclined to do what is right for Nigeria and Nigerians. The allure of power however,
remains so tempting that even the most decent human beings sometimes go astray.
All Nigerians, at home and abroad, along with our well wishers all over the world are watching with baited breath!
Bye,
Ola
