CALL FOR JEGA'S RESIGNATION ILL-ADVISED

NIGERIA, Abuja; February 6, 2015:   The Chekwas Okorie Presidential Campaign Organization (COPCO) is terribly disturbed by the recent call by a group of elders for the resignation of Professor Attahiru Jega, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). A group that calls itself the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, led by Chief Edwin Clerk, gave a press conference yesterday in which it accused Jega of a conspiracy with "northern leaders" to rig the February 14th election against President Goodluck Jonathan.

COPCO takes allegations of election rigging very seriously and condemns all proven efforts to give an undue and illegal advantage to any candidate or party. However, we find it troubling that elder statesmen, who should be guiding Nigerian youths on how to exercise their rights to vote, are threatening to prevent elections from taking place in the Southern areas of the nation. It does not help matters, nor does it speak well for the legacy of these men, that they are partisan supporters of President Jonathan.

We remind the world that Professor Jega is the same man who supervised the 2011 general elections that returned Jonathan as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces in his own rights. In that election General Buhari was also a candidate for president. Chief Chekwas Okorie at this time remains confident in the ability of Jega and the capacity of INEC to conduct the upcoming elections. We urge Jega to remain committed and courageous.

COPCO commends the patriotic resolve of the Council of States that met recently in Abuja at the invitation of President Jonathan, for reportedly advising that INEC proceed with its constitutional duties. We also commend President Jonathan for seeking the advice of this very important body. We urge the President to reject any advice for him to take any action that would jeopardize the unity of Nigerians at home or the credibility of the nation in the eyes of the international community.
