INEC'S DECISION TO RESCHEDULE ELECTIONS UNFORTUNATE AND REGRETABLE
NIGERIA, Abuja; February 8, 2015: Chief Dr. Chekwas Okorie, the presidential candidate of the United Progressives Party (UPP), has described as unfortunate the Independent National Electoral Commission's decision to postpone the general elections originally scheduled for the month of February. Yesterday, after a meeting with political party officials in which the UPP participated, the INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, announced that the dates of the elections have been shifted to March 28 (for president and national assembly) and April 11, 2015 (for governors and state assemblies).
This decision is regrettable in light of the fact that it was reached as result of tremendous pressure the government and its officials and agents mounted on INEC, including organized and apparently sponsored calls for the resignation of Professor Jega. As a responsible party with patriotic leadership, the UPP calls on its supporters to accept this development in good faith and stay calm and peaceful.
We also call on our supporters to remain vigilant, however. The recent developments have demonstrated that the notion of an independent electoral agency is a mirage. The credibility of INEC and its chairman has suffered and the UPP suspects that this postponement is only the first in a series of intrigues to come.
We commend the consultative efforts of Jega and INEC nevertheless. We reiterate our call to President Jonathan and all political parties and their operatives to refrain from actions and rhetoric that could jeopardize the unity, life and property of Nigerians at home or the credibility of the nation among other nations of the world.
