Nigeria on my mind. When democracy toppled the darkness of Abacha's dictatorship, many of us were giddy with joy and looked forward to a real independence. Some of the world's best minds rushed to power centers, filled with energy and promise about the coming transformation of Nigeria. Sadly, Nigerian style democracy has been an expensive farce. We definitely need to shut it down; it is unsustainable and it hurts us.
I believe now that we lost a real opportunity, beginning in 1999 to use structural means (independent accountability systems, devolving power to the locals, etc) to build a sustainable democracy, suited to our country. This democracy has gulped trillions of Naira? with previous little to show for it. It is unsustainable. That much should be obvious.
By the way, a lot of people (let's be generous and call them public intellectuals, sigh!) yelling in the public space are long on passion (and in many cases greed!) but unschooled in the art of running complex systems. They have never ever supervised anyone but their kids perhaps and would not know a purchase order if one slapped them. They are supporting their friends who got thrust into power without any experience. They are playing God with the future of the children of the oppressed while their children are here in the West with mine, taking Spanish, Chinese in between breaks from piano lessons. Running a country nor be beans, but what do they care, they have nothing to lose. These are the characters racing our nation to hell. They ought to be stopped.
