RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Between the APC and the PDC: Living with the illusion of change/Correction

Quotable Quotes against Colonialism

"The issue for me is not whether European colonialism did some good or not. The main issue is that colonialism
was an illegal enterprise imposed on the peoples of the African territories without their informed consent.
Whether some people eventually benefited from it does not justify its imposition. " John Mbaku

"it was the psychological burden imposed on a conquered people, told they were inferior, in need of being civilized -
for that we need not only cesaire's dismantling of the hypocrisy of colonial rhetoric, when he accused
the conquering european democracies of acting as did the fascists. but we need,
at least for starters, fanon and memmi, the classic texts on the disenabling psychology of colonialism"......Harrow

"It is not that roads were built etc. It is that those roads did not have to be built with whips and lashes.
Cultural and technological exchanges did not have to happen under relations of domination and superiority." Bode

"The pride of being a free individual with dignity is more important than colonialism with its so called development.
Those of us who were born many years before independence still know the horror of colonialism. ......
Tell me how many miles of roads, hospitals, dispensaries, schools etc did they build before independence?
How many jobs did they create for our people? They forced our people to pay taxes and those who could not pay
were put in local confinement. They introduced divide and rule to cause disunity and harmony among the people.
That legacy of divide and rule is still our yoke of burden. Colonialism is perpetually evil. It violates the rights of
individuals and takes away human dignity and pride. It takes away the identity of the people colonized. "
Segun Ogungbemi

"The shiny edifice of the European metropolis has its tap root in the loot of Africa and Asia. Any so-called
learned person who does not know that needs a re-education about the viciousness of the colonial enterprise. "
Folu Ogundimu

" Who, except a shallow thinker would admit that a country is better off in perpetual slavery instead of independently
transforming itself through its own people into a modern democratic economic power? .......eating with your master's
dogs in the comforts of your home can never be comparable even if you starve but own your home.
The development the colonialists gave were bones to humans they had dehumanised into dogs."
I. K. Babajide

Any defense of colonialism, in any form, is really an insult to all the anti-colonial activists around the world,
past and present- from the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, South Asia to Africa- people who have given
their lives to be free from colonial despotism and its exploitative taxes, forced labor, forced recruitment to fight
European civil wars, segregated railway carriages, segregated residential zones, and segregated schools and churches -
and issues so eloquently illuminated in the above quotes.
