Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: Ghana's Ex-President Rawlings on the Nigeria's Presidential Election!

Rawlings' reference to the image of President Jonathan allegedly going up to complain to the French president about Boko Haram is the kind of self-righteous indignation and ridiculing of Nigeria common among some members of the Ghanaian elite who increasingly actually believe they're superior to Nigerians. Here's a former Ghanaian president whose beggar nation relies on foreign partners for up to 67 percent of its budget, thanks to its unenviable status as a "Highly Indebted Poor Country" (HIPC). The primary attraction for Ghanaian armed forces' participation in UN Peacekeeping operations is to obtain new military kits (especially camouflage pants and shirts, and desert combat boots), and discarded equipment donated by other countries at the end of each mission. Almost ALL the boats used by the Ghanaian Navy are donations of decommissioned and refurbished US Coast Guard cotters. As I stated in this forum some time ago, Ghana is yet to repatriate about 4,000 of its citizens who are still in Togo as refugees from its recurring civil wars in the north. Ghana's Muslims are among the most discriminated and poorest religious minorities in West Africa--and they've been mobilizing heavily lately. "Ghana is a Christian nation" is the in-your-face mantra heard every where, even in the presence of Muslim leaders and politicians elected to the highest offices in the country. Let's keep our fingers crossed "the Gateway to West Africa" won't be caught flat-footed one day, should they allow things to get out of hand. Malians were similarly conned into believing they were the Mecca of democracy and civilian control of the military in Africa until the Tuareg deflated this myth in 2012.

Thankfully, not all Ghanaians are like the loud-mouthed "Junior Jesus."

Okey

GG,

Do not mind Rawlings. It was France that equipped Niger and Chad to achieve the 6 week change of fortune of the Nigerian army against BH.

The problems of Africa are deep and far more than the empty symbolism that Jerry Rawlings harks upon!

Cheers.

Absolutely well said.

That was not a good sight and may we never see it again. Clearly, the horse and cart were put in reverse order. After all, in just about six weeks the same Nigerian army with some support from neighbouring countries have decimated the powers and stronghold of Boko Haram. We did not see the French army. Over 200 girls remain missing. Never again!

STATEMENT BY Ghana's EX-PRESIDENT JERRY RAWLINGS ON OUTCOME OF NIGERIA'S ELECTIONS

April 1, 2015 by jjrawlings

jerry-photo"Nigerians have taken the lead in the rejection of corruption. The election result is a manifestation of the people's resolve to confront corruption, dishonesty and exploitation.

This is a clear message to the new leadership. A bold step has been taken towards a new Nigeria and the incoming leader cannot be unaware of what is expected of him.

Nigerians did not vote for just anyone. They voted for a man whose integrity is extremely high. Nigeria is tired of corruption and the choice of this leader is a clear indication of where she wants to go. I hope General Buhari will put together a team whose understanding of the power of the people recognizes and respects the will of the people.

General Buhari owes it to his people and to Black Africans, the restoration of our pride and the black man's dignity.
