USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Abia State Senator Uche Chukumerije, Publisher of AFRISCOPE Magazine, Passes Away at 75!

"The departed senator was a malevolent force against the realization of democracy in Nigeria, and that too ought to be part of his memoriam. He trenchantly stymied the trajectory of a noble cause, and his deeds and misdeeds as the shameless factotum of the Shonekan and Abacha regimes brought grief to many families."( Ebenezer Obadare).

The other factotums of the Abacha government were: (1) IBB, who continued to prevail on Abacha not to de-annul the June 12th 1993 election supposedly won by Abiola. (2) Buhari, who was very close to the Abacha government and (3) Obasanjo, who said that Abiola was not the messiah Nigeria needed and later benefited from the annulment.

The above named are now our new messiahs, mouthing the change slogan.

CAO.

Thanks Professor Irele. But Senator Chukwumerije was more than that, and for the sake of posterity, it is important that even as we mourn, we continue to see clearly.

Part of doing justice to the memory of the dead has to be a honest accounting of what they did while alive.

May the senator rest in piece- and may the facts of his public service remain fresh in our memory.

Ebenezer Obadare

Uche was a good friend and a great journalist. I wish him good repose.

Nigerian Senator Uche Chukwumerije died on Sunday, April 19, 2015 after a long battle with lung cancer, his family has disclosed.Senator Uche Chukwumerije

In a statement, issued by Che Chidi Chukwumerije, the family stated that Senator Chukwumerije was "surrounded by his family", as he "passed into the open arms of history, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, after a long but gallant battle with lung cancer." SaharaReport announced that the Nigerian legislator died at the Turkish Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, at the age of 75.

Senator Chukwumerije, Publisher of the defunct AFRICOPE Magazine of Lagos, came to national prominence when he served as Information Minister in the interim government of Mr. Ernest Shonekan and, briefly, in the regime of the late General Sani Abacha. He later won a seat to the National Assembly in Abuja, where he served as a Senator from Abia State. He was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education.

The statement by Senator Chukumerije's family added that burial arrangements would be announced at a later date. We all mourn with the family!
