USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: Abia State Senator Uche Chukumerije, Publisher of AFRISCOPE Magazine, Passes Away at 75!

"The departed senator was a malevolent force against the realization of democracy in Nigeria, and that too ought to be part of his memoriam. He trenchantly stymied the trajectory of a noble cause, and his deeds and misdeeds as the shameless factotum of the Shonekan and Abacha regimes brought grief to many families.'

EBO

More than other members of the Shonekan and Abacha regimes did? More than Abiola did over the many years he bestride Nigeria governments with his "wealth"?

What exactly did Senator Uche Chukwumerije do to deserve what seems to me to be a gross misrepresentation of his role in Nigeria's history? There will always be those who employ of fuzzy generalizations to present personal opinion and fact.

Do Uche's critics know for example that he was a national student leader as a UI student and paid a high personal cost for his stand against the military pact the Tafawa Balewa government was going to enter into with the British government so soon after Nigeria's independence from that country? Uche, as an informed, intelligent, patriotic young man,  believed that independence meant something and that Nigeria's should.

Do Uche's critics know that like Chinua Achebe, Balalrabe Musa, and other genuine patriots, Uche chose for reasons of patriotism and principle, to belong to Aminu Kano's PRP when he could have walked into the business-transaction parties of the day even though he knew that the PRP had no real chance of electoral success as a national party? If only Uche's critics knew more history.

Uche was a great Nigerian. He served Nigeria well as every Nigerian is expected and duty bound to do. He was never going to meet everyone's  standards especially when the standards are punctuated with incontrovertible bias. All who knew Uche as the man he wanted to be and was, will miss him. I certainly will.

Thanks Professor Irele. But Senator Chukwumerije was more than that, and for the sake of posterity, it is important that even as we mourn, we continue to see clearly.

The departed senator was a malevolent force against the realization of democracy in Nigeria, and that too ought to be part of his memoriam. He trenchantly stymied the trajectory of a noble cause, and his deeds and misdeeds as the shameless factotum of the Shonekan and Abacha regimes brought grief to many families.

Part of doing justice to the memory of the dead has to be a honest accounting of what they did while alive.

May the senator rest in piece- and may the facts of his public service remain fresh in our memory.

Regards,

Ebenezer Obadare

Uche was a good friend and a great journalist. I wish him good repose.

In a statement, issued by Che Chidi Chukwumerije, the family stated that Senator Chukwumerije was "surrounded by his family", as he "passed into the open arms of history, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, after a long but gallant battle with lung cancer." SaharaReport announced that the Nigerian legislator died at the Turkish Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, at the age of 75.

Senator Chukwumerije, Publisher of the defunct AFRICOPE Magazine of Lagos, came to national prominence when he served as Information Minister in the interim government of Mr. Ernest Shonekan and, briefly, in the regime of the late General Sani Abacha. He later won a seat to the National Assembly in Abuja, where he served as a Senator from Abia State. He was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education.

The statement by Senator Chukumerije's family added that burial arrangements would be announced at a later date. We all mourn with the family!
