USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: [africanworldforum] Re: [MsJoe] Buhari's wins. Reality Checks - ethno-political axis; relevant African Developments. When Can We Be Serious?

It would be a mistake for an appointee from SE to be endorsed  by  APC in SE  as a condition - if the appointment is a tacit bridge to the Igbos. It defeats the whole purpose. The appointee  should have the backing of the Igbos and majority did not vote for Buhari, neither are they likely to care for  blessings from  APC Igbos. Kind of demeaning, don't you think?

Let me give you  few examples. Almost all the Hispanics appointed by Obama have strong roots in their communities. Our own Montgomery County, Md Tom Perez, now Secretary of Labor, was a board member of Casa de Maryland, an immigrant advocacy group and he enjoyed wide support in  the Hispanic community for his activism. Casa is an affiliate of National Council of La Raza where another Hispanic appointee, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Maria Sotomayor,  was a board member. Bush's Labor Secretary, Elaine Chao, was head of  the Asians for Bush campaign. What I am saying is that appointees consciously chosen with ethnic consideration usually have the backing of the population with a history of serving the interest of the demographic group.

Mr. Emeka Anyaoku is married to a Yoruba woman from Abeokuta and he is certainly qualified. If he is appointed for his qualification and nothing else, that's fine.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku does not belong to any political party. I am sure SE APC leaders can be convinced to support him. He is a well respected Nigerian, and he is respected in the diplomatic world.

Uncle Ayo:

We cannot have the luxury of sentiments and wishes.  Hehehe, are you now a religious speaker on how Buhari fears God?   Was there a theocracy election? Even if you are a Yoruba Muslim, you must have respect for the born again Christian and incoming VP Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo. You must not start a new wahala on whose God - Jesus or Mohammed? around Aso Rock. Lordy, lordy, smile.:-))

Anyway, scroll to the end and tell me whether leading a Pan-African organization that influences  global  socio-politics, and the pertinent  socioeconomic is not a more reckoning position than a country minister?  For example, the current Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and a Yoruba,  Akinwumi Adesinais one of the eight  candidates vying to be the next President of the African Development Bank, which will be  decided in May 2015. Almost all are current ministers and only the Tunisian is a former Minister.  I included the pictures

Jonathan apparently had a row with Morocco over this because Rabat claimed  Aso Rock tried  to pressure the King to back Adesina. Why I brought this up is relevant to your point on ministerial  appointments that can be globally respected. I explained later in this mail.

Back to the headline,  I am dealing with hard core reality based on the political demographics of now.  If you say SW had  specific interests or vexations to not vote for Jonathan/PDP, you are implicitly agreeing that the voting was ethno-political. You cannot have it both ways. I do not have a problem with ethno-prerogatives and I concede that democracy accommodates the exercise of the liberty.

Reality dictates new plays. Obasanjo, the PDP standard bearer,  lost in his own local area in 1999.  The defunct, Yoruba dominated Alliance for Democracy was the force there.  1999 was a far different fever and something that the North could live with after an unbroken grip on ruler-ship. PDP dominated in the North. Where they had their convention in Jos, Plateau, legend has it that IBB - that would be Babaginda - had a money bag. On March 28, 2015, his wiles could not deliver Niger State. How the field changes...are you with me? Wink if you want....lol.

In 2003, the Yorubas were pragmatic in knowing their SW-centered parties  cannot win any national  election and adopted Obasanjo. In 2007, of course, with PDP  still the party to beat and Northern stalwarts more committed, the splintered parties had no chance. Same occurred in 2011 out of a mixture of circumstances. Ribadu found out that. lol.

After the 2011 election,  smarting up, the merging of opposition parties resulted in a NORTHERN-SOUTHWEST ETHNO-POLITICAL ALLIANCE. What is it that even the blind cannot figure out?

The  natural complacency of the incumbent party, which had ruled since the post military era, toxic infighting and vengeance that made even founding members to flee (no small thanks to Obasanjo), are self-inflicting PDP wounds.  In one of his cantankerous attacks, Obasanjo dictated that Jonathan promised to quit and not contest 2015 and the presidency should go NorthSomeone opined, hilariously so, that APC barely restrained itself from giving Obasanjo an APC party card.

With the  image of Jonathan as a weak president,  his better accomplishments not sensitized or even undermined,  corruption charges with no commensurate rebuttals;  Boko Haram  (where are the Chibok girls?);  and a more experienced opposition, the political landscape was ready for play makers.  Pan Africanists in  other nations were vocally angry with Jonathan whom they believe did  not reflect the might of Nigeria to the glory of Africa. In fact, one pissed off writer  from Sierra Leon remembered how Abacha who wiped out the roguish insurgency  in Sierra Leone and Liberia with the Nigerian-led ECOMOG Force. They do no care whether Buhari was a military man as I believe Nigerians who voted for him do not.

In 2015, PDP needed to split /break even the Northern votes for a chance.  But the North fell to Buhari in numbers that even if goats and cows voted in SE and SS, organizations for the better treatment of animals would have cried foul and protested to ICC because of the sheer numbers needed to erase the blow out from the North.  Vice President Sambo could not deliver his own Kaduna state. Well, that is no end of the world....if Al Gore won his own state of Tennessee, George Bush the Junior would not have been  President. And there would not have been any Iraq war based on lies of mass deceptions.

Let's move on, the election is over.

So you say Buhari should appoint a top notched Igbo to a visible spot?  Not a bad idea. In fact, it is smart politics. If the person is a non-APC, the  better comparison will be Obama appointing Republicans to a position. That happens, for examples,  with Secretary of Defense and Transportation.  Hmmmm, I see Rochas Okorochas  and Amechi of Rivers tearing their shirts.....so we work for nathiiiiing........and people who opposed us are now rewarded. That is chop broke  pot politics.

Secretary of State, the equivalent of Foreign Minister,  is usually a person in the party because they must demonstrate ideological loyalty and telegraph the thinking of the President at all times. Obama's master stroke with Hillary contributed to his two term victory. Bill himself explained Obama's policies as the President couldn't in the Democratic National Convention in 2012. By the way, the Clintons needed no introduction to  world stage and she brought star power.

Currently, country ministers from Africa do not command the kind of international recognition even if they have 10 PhDs and have worked for 44 years in the field.  A dunce of a European minister  can still talk nonsense and will be taken seriously because he/she is echoing the thoughts of his/her region or even  NATO's ideas to be reckoned with. The Asians carry a big stic k whether their language is understood or not. Their inroad, especially China, in Africa frightened the hell out of US scribes. That is what the US-Africa Summit was all about. To catch up.

We need a RESPECTABLE AFRICA whose collateral power will be reckoned with and African ministers would be a reflection of the prestige when they deal with international players.

A few weeks ago, the Ethiopian Foreign Minister was here and went to see Steve Hayes of Corporate Council on Africa. That should not be happening. You send an aide in the embassy. Our African ministers come to Washington and it is pitiful if they have to be squirreled around.

Wait-o, if Buhari  pushes the actualization of  the AU Rapid Response Force to  combat Boko Haram, people will call him MESSIAH!  As he fights corruption in Naija, all will be clapping!!! All other African nations will say Yes...!!!! The soldier turn civilian is the Man to watch! and even carry his bag.

Here are the candidates for the African Development Bank with endorsements,  including from  Regional Governors of Banks: Akinwumi Adesina, Nigeria's Agriculture Minister;  Chad's Finance Minster - Kordje Bedoumra; Cape Verde's Finance Minister - Cristina Duarte (the only female candidate;) Mali's Vice President of Operations for the Islamic Development Bank -  Birama Boubacar SidibeTunisia's former Minister of Finance - Jaloul Ayedthe current Vice President of the African Development Bank,  Zimbabwean Thomas Sakala; Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister  - Samura Kamara; and Ethiopian Finance Minister - Sufian Ahmed.

Now Africans, we need to be serious through credible organizing and delivery. All these yahoo-ism bores the heck...except I just want to clearly laugh......

Cheers.

Subject: Re: [MsJoe] Buhari's wins convincing and should be an example of Africa's nascent democracy coming to stay.

Ms Joe,
That " the votes distinctly reflect ethno-political casting" is being portrayed as a "Yoruba/North gang-up".  We should be careful to avoid the unintended consequence of creating a monstrous political block (SW + North) that may end up being politically un-tamable. That North has always voted Buhari is understandable, especially after Yar'Adu's death. SW voted Jonathan in 2011 apart from being at the fore-front to ensure Jonathan as Vice President became Acting President when Yar'Adua died. If SW decided not to vote for Jonathan in 2015 because of his poor performance, and because of SW's complaint of having been marginalized by Jonathan's administration, I find it odd that it is being portrayed as a gang-up, or that there was an alliance as if there was a meeting where the two geopolitical regions decided to vote in a particular way.

I agree with you that election is over and governing should start. We should of course have an open mind as we wait for " how the new political maturity will translate into equitable development in all geopolitical zones". We should avoid a mindset that there is a gang-up, because a gang-up must have a target or targets intended to be victim(s) of the gang-up. Politics apart, President-elect Buhari has a history of being God-fearing with no grudge against any geopolitical zone / geopolitical zones.

With so much on his plate, the President-elect will be wise to do what Obama did to be able to face the domestic challenges squarely: appoint an Hilary Clinton as Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister, someone that is already familiar with the terrain of international relations and diplomacy, and who will command respect of international organizations and Presidents/Heads of State. Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku comes to mind. Someone of his status can speak on behalf of the President without any iota of doubt that he has the President's authority to commit him and the country.

Ayo Ojutalayo

Hello Uncle Ayo:

While not subtracting anything from this tectonic election, which has made Africa so proud, there is no denying that the votes distinctly reflect ethno-political casting. I quicken to add, and it is fair in democracy.

Of course, there would be pockets of SE and even SS in the APC essence - but it is not the norm, just as we have African Americans in the Republican party.

Internally in Naija, how the new political maturity will translate into equitable development in all geopolitical zones is what pricks my interest.

What will change in global geopolitics, such as US, EU policy and how AU will be assertive as a result of Buhari,  is what concerns me because it affects African development.

The Americans and Europeans are already figuring all that with think tank conferences, lobbyist maneuvering, and other mechanisms to influence/corner opportunities in Africa.  I hope the Buhari victory and administration will usher winds of change, especially in free and fair elections, in more parts of Africa....and with the mandate, the leaders can led! and defend/protect Africa's interest and serve the people.

So to me, the election is over and governing should begin.

Here we are shooting breeze over nothing.  I think it is more productive for Nigerians/Africans who care about such matters to rise to the discourse and action through a credible organizing and delivery. Africans lament that African governments prefer White lobbyists, companies, contractors and anything but Africa for development engagements and representations.  That is correct and practical because  Africans behave like "crab in the basket" with more individuals whose interest starts and ends with what they can get with no organizational platform standards to uphold the reputation of the industry or no thought that they have to build to gain. Worse, they pull down others instead on focusing on what they want to do. That is another version of greed and roguery. That is why Cooperate Council on Africa and other non-African entities rule the roost regardless of who wins in Nigeria or other parts of Africa.

SO WHAT WILL REALLY CHANGE and CAN AFRICANS CHANGE IT?

Cheers!

Ms Joe,

Don't mind Collins. The election is won and lost already. What INEC announces in Abuja is what has already been announced at local government and state levels by local INEC. That is why the overall winner is known already. We are only waiting for a formal declaration. As human beings we always ask for miracle to change what we don't like. That is why Collins is expecting a miracle to change what is obvious.

Colly:

Maybe my sources in Naija did not do the  math correctly.  I am disappointed but in my line of discipline, brooding is not an option. My chin is up. If the numbers do not hold up and the SS votes tip them, I expect my currently elated friends  ( hahahaha lol, lol) to be equally kind and donate minerals enough for a party.

Right now, they are flying high like kites. :-)Some are already on their way to Abuja from the Diaspora. Neb, darling, please I don't want to see you start writing your name with SAN, SAN:-))

Best and peace to all.

Ms Joe,

Results from 5 states in the South South --Rivers (1.5 Million), Edo, Delta, Cross River, and Bayelsa are yet to be released. We are talking of at least 6 Million votes in Jonathan's stronghold, so go figure.

Buhari won -  no buts, ifs. The hotly contested election has its up-side on democracy - regardless of the plays, which are inherent in opposition politics. I am  wrapping up with Western  spectators and speculators on African Affairs - as we monitored the returns from known and unofficial channels. When 3/4 of the votes came in, the Fat Lady Sang.  I offered fried plantains,  soya or suya, and assorted drinks from Africa. I don't know whether all these were duty free - say AGOA....LOL.

Wellu, wellu, Africa proved that on this, she needed no lecture on conducting credible elections. The calamitous projection from the Western and jaundiced  press is not going to happen.

We must move on and wish Buhari God's speed in  governing, including tackling to erase Boko Haram.

The life of each Nigerian and the sanctity of peace are more important than an election cycle. The national tasks ahead are more crucial. The polity cannot be over heated to embittered ends. Nigeria  is too pivotal in African Affairs to let the sentiments of our preferences overshadow the greater good. I am proud of  SouthEastern  and the South-South States for holding to principles and convictions.  The Ekiti Exceptionality, this smooch is for you! lol. Don't fear....retribution in SW.  Buha will not lock up anyone for dissing him.

See some of you on April 17 at the US Congress - Leveraging Africa Diaspora Capital for Development. Buhari will also need that.... as all African governments....lol.
