USA Africa Dialogue Series - Beyond the rhetoric of the inauguration

I won't lie, I did enjoy reading President Buhari's inaugural speech. I thought it was well written and said all the right things. But then, Buhari seemed too jet lagged to care about his speech. I needed subtitles to understand him. The speech I read was nice, what I heard was, well, different! His handlers need to handle him better. He should not have returned from London on the eve of the Inauguration. That was exceedingly poor judgement.

Talk is cheap though. We have to force the APC and Buhari's administration to do the right thing. The Inauguration as a whole was a huge bust, it merely proved for instance that APC is clueless on the role of youths in the change. There was no youthful energy, all we had to watch were these ancient thieving and/or bumbling faces! Atiku, Obasanjo, Abubakar, Babangida, ad nauseam. The inauguration was an embarrassing congress of ancient kleptomaniacs. What do we call a gathering of thieving baboons against? Congress!

First things first: I wouldn't hold Buhari to the scores of APC's campaign promises. They were put together by adult kindergarteners with no sense. Nigerians should judge him by his work, if he comes to work. Again, Buhari's folks should ignore the APC's silly campaign promises and spend the next 100 days drafting a coherent framework for structural reform.

The other thing Buhari's people should do is to manage optics. One gets the very clear impression that his communications people are in over their heads. He should put together a real communications team versed in representing complex organizations. Relying on social media touts with nothing but anger management issues is a recipe for failure. He is not being represented well. Buhari should also understand that he has been given a big job; hobnobbing with kleptomaniacs in public rubbishes his claims to probity and honesty. That leaving people behind to go pray to his ancestors was a huge mistake. Going to London and returning on the eve of the inauguration was beyond incomprehensible; it was baffling.

How is Buhari going to tackle corruption? To be honest, the presidency is pretty limited in doing what must be done. It is a democracy and Buhari is not going to be successful at meeting the people's expectations. I would be satisfied if he kept his distance from them but he and his vp seem to be embracing the purveyors of graft!

And why doesn't he have staff in place already? He knew months ago that he had at least a 50 percent chance of winning. This gaffe is inexcusable and shows how unprepared he is for leadership. Nigerians must help this man. We are in real trouble.

In sum, I honestly believe that democracy, Nigerian style is inappropriate for our circumstances. Inauguration: A congress of ancient kleptomaniacs. Congress: A gathering of baboons. It may be the case that Nigeria is officially a rogue state, governed by self-serving criminals. In that respect, it is not much different from a state like America. Mindless capitalism, reigns, fuels the gross debauchery of consumerism, thou shalt not be caught is the mantra.

Nigeria has learned well from America; her structures may be more primitive but the outcome is the same; the triumphant savagery of greed by patriarchy. A few people make the rules, loot and own the wealth and labor hard to make the people believe in the enterprise. Capitalism exaggerates the mirage that George Orwell called Animal Farm. In the people, Boxers abound.

In America, the prisons are filled with the poor because the laws were written for them. Just like in Nigeria. The prisoners of America may be luckier than Nigerians. They have free wifi in their libraries. Yes, their prisons have libraries.  A new dawn is the same dawn. Yawn.
