Yes, indeed. I did not realize how important this is until when I taught Western Humanities and had to learn all those different styles. In all my studies in Nigeria, I never took a course in art history or something that emphasized that. It is very informative. We became friends with the Professor of Art History in my school because now I tell him after listening to several of his lectures, when I see any kind of art work, I begin to think what might be the author's intent and what was she or he trying to communicate and for what purpose.

At that time I was forced to take students to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and give them lectures on Ancient Greek, Roman, Medieval, and Renaissance Art. I remember how initially uneasy that was, since I was not trained in that area. But frankly with a good textbook and a love for and appreciation of social history, it is easy to get on the bandwagon.

I will truly love to see African art promoted as it is done and taken seriously in the West. It is not just the piece of artwork per se, but the story behind it. Indeed, at one point, I thought if I have the money I will open a small museum of my own demonstrating over time the struggles of the poor as represented in artwork. It is always nice and great to know what people are trying to communicate and why? Artworks are like books, they are texts that need to be read carefully and analyzed.
