Folks:

There are various levels, types and colors of corruption in Nigeria, particularly in higher education. Whereas the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife basks in its purported top ranking, they missed the absurdity that the same outfit that made them Number 1 also included Wellspring University and Landmark University among the top 25 universities in Nigeria. Ironically, on August 14th, 2015, the National Universities Commission in a well-publicized press conference declared Landmark University and Wellspring University--along with nine other private universities--as "sub-standard" and consequently denied them "full operational licenses for their inability to meet set standards three years after they were issued provisional licenses." See news story below.

Of course, there are a few other more credible rankings in which OAU eats the dust of its peers. And to rank Federal University, Dutsin Ma (which started in 2012) and the scraggy Kogi State Polytechnic at Lokoja higher than any university in Nigeria really says it all about the seriousness of this ranking that the OAU folks are celebrating.

Peace as always!

Nigerian universities are substandard – NUC

The National Universities Commission, NUC, on Thursday denied 11 private universities operating in Nigeria full operational licenses for their inability to meet set standards three years after they were issued provisional licenses.

Speaking at the presentation of the full operational licenses to nine other private universities, the NUC Executive Secretary, Julius Okojie, said the 11 affected private universities were given two years to get their full operational licenses, but failed to get in in three.

The affected universities are Wesley University of Science and Technology, Landmark University, Rhema University, Samuel Adegboyega University, Paul University, Oduduwa University, Tansian University, Baze University, Obong University, Achievers University and Wellspring University.

Mr. Okojie, who did not mention any punitive measure for the affected universities, explained that the provisional license was intended to create room for effective mentoring and qualitative growth within the first three years of operation of a new private university.

He noted that the universities were also to be monitored by NUC to ensure that they comply with the original purpose of establishment.

"That was also part of NUC's initiative for early warning signals to detect compromises in quality for the application of corrective and remedial measures to redress such situations," he said.

He added that the commission monitors the activities of universities in the country, and inspects and penalises them through the accreditation process.

"If we don't monitor them now they will have problems. So they will slow down on programmes, (we) look at their staff strength and look at their programmes," he said.

Also speaking, the Vice chancellor of Caleb University,  Ayodeji Olukoju, said private universities are the way forward for tertiary education in the country.

He said since interim licenses were given, the institutions had focused on academic programme development, system development and infrastructural development.

The nine universities that received full operational licenses are Veritas University, Caleb University, Geofery Okoye University, Fountain University, Adeleke University, Western Delta University, Afe Babalola University, Salem University and Nigerian Turkish Nile University.

An international institute which ranks universities in the world, Cybermetrics Lab of Spain, has released a new list of the best universities across the globe and in Nigeria particularly.

For the fifth time in a row the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, has been rank as the top in the country.
Olarewaju Abiodun, the public relations officer of OAU, in a statement unveiled on August 20, noted that the university ranking body valued the curricular, research, academic and general administration of the university as the best in the country.

He noted that in the latest ranking, which was published on August 17, the universities of Lagos and Ilorin came second and third correspondingly.

On his own part, Bamitale Omole, vice chancellor of the university, said this was the first time in the history of higher education in Nigeria where one university "would maintain its position as the first and the best in the country for more than four consecutive times."

Vice chancellor credited the achievement to years of hard work and commitment to duty of the academic, administrative and technical members of personnel, "whose contributions have placed the university far and above more than 100 other universities in Nigeria."

The comment reads in part: "Prof. Omole emphasised his determination to make training and retraining of members of staff, on a regular basis, his topmost priority, adding that he would not rest on his oars until OAU becomes the best in Africa, and one of the top 10 in the world."
He asked the federal government to invest more funds into university education in the country in order to achieve more.

It should be noted that O.A.U is a leading research institution. The university has a strong tradition of preparing the students for high achievement, no matter where their ambitions take them.

The university offers undergraduate degree and postgraduate degree programmes in all major disciplines. The Postgraduate College currently has 264 programmes. Short-term/summer visiting programmes are available for foreign students.
