USA Africa Dialogue Series - Fwd: The 'Spartan' Nigerian Ruler : Magnificent Facebook Thread on Comparative Semantics and Comparative Political Economy Exemplified by Nigeria

Garba Shehu declaring his boss assets publicly told a shocked world that Buhari is living a "Spartan lifestyle".
How does a man with 30 million naira ($150,000) in his bank account, who owns 2 houses in Kaduna,2 in Daura,1 each in Kano and Abuja, plots of land in Kano,Port Harcourt and ''an orchard and a ranch with 270 head of cattle, 25 sheep, five horses and a variety of birds'' live a Spartan lifestyle?
In addition he "had shares in Berger Paints, Union Bank and Skye Bank".

This gentleman apparently never heard of Uruguayan president Jose Mujica declaration of asset five years ago in 2010.The only asset to his name was a 1987 Volkswagen Beetle.

Mr Garba Shehu, why have you made the entire world laugh at us?What made you bring this shame on us sir?

  • Yomi Okusanya Scott Compared to many civil servants never mind former heads of state , he's not only living a 'spartan' life ...He can comfortably be described as being very poor...and you know it .. I guess that's how a lot of people will see it. ..
    • Chika Omeje MAS,so you have the strength to laugh?
    • Mudasiru Adebayo Salami My Bros you've got to see the positive side of events sometimes or else heart problem may not be too far from one. I am a Heart Surgeon and I know our emotional states affect our cardiac health.
    • Chika Omeje Na wa o.No hope for the poor in Nigeria.
    • Mudasiru Adebayo Salami Chika Bro I am an eternal and realistic optimist. The poor indeed have hope in Nigeria as evidenced by improved business among those whose trade depends on power supply. The amount of money spent on buying petrol for generators has nosedived due to influence of good leadership. We can raise eyebrows concerning the unexpected wealth of Muhammadu Buhari and humongous wealth of Professor Yemi Osinbajo but that should not detract us from their force of example in public asset declaration. What should be our concern is what can we contribute as citizens?

The key steps are for each citizen to work hard and excel in his chosen area of endeavor while supporting the country and current leadership in any way we can. That support however should not be blind. For constructive criticism is one of the branches of patriotism.

Muhammadu Buhari's government has a unique opportunity to heal the divisive wounds of Nigeria by enthroning good governance and accountability. By the time we all see concrete programmes, performance, infrastructural development, justice and massive job creation no propaganda from enemies of the nation will work again. Everyone loves a winner and here lies the opportunity to heal the wounds of the past by extending hands of fellowship to all. A little pity and encouragement for those who refuse to see any good in the 'other' may also go a long way to turn hearts to good.

  • Adaugo Falcon Uzoma It definitely looks like the offices of the "presidential mouthpieces" are cursed ones. Imagine the idiocy.
  • Ndi Syke Chuks Nwasike What Garba Shehu is saying is that PMB stole less than the others. But seriously, the assets declaration ought to include assets owned by spouses and children of the officers. It's acknowledged that his family lives in the UK. Are they living on rented property?
  • Retson A. O. Tedheke Ndi Syke Chuks Nwasike; I wonder when studying in the UK becomes living in the UK?
  • Peace Jude Garba Shehu mixing information on assets declaration and an image laundering campaign in one place is mundanity redefined.
  • Chika Omeje Ndi Syke Chuks Nwasike, even at this, the world consider this as stupendous wealth. The world have seen Jose Mujica asset decalartion in 2010 and a comparison is not even feasible...........................................................................................................''In a sworn statement detailing his assets, Mr Mujica said he has no bank accounts or other assets and put his small flower farm in his wife's name, only possessing the ageing car, worth £1,300.
Mr Mujica, a former leftist guerrilla, took office in March and he is popular in the small ranching nation for his modest lifestyle and down-to-earth attitude.
The 75-year-old president's sworn statement, made public this week, shows Mr Mujica has no debt – or savings – and does not own any other property.
Mr Mujica's presidential salary is £8,000 per month, but he donates most of that to the ruling leftist coalition and a public housing programme.
He has refused to move to the official presidential residence, opting to stay in the simple home his senator wife owns on the outskirts of the capital, Montevideo.''
  • Inno Uzuh Cfr Alléluia ! Corruption is getting a shellacking from this govt! Gbam.
  • Kelechi Deca @Chika Omeje, your deductions are wrong based on the assumption that 'living a spartan life' can not be a matter of choice. Often times when someone is described in such terms, it means that person can afford not to.It is in most cases, matters of choice. You dont say that a poor man is living a spartan lifestyle because his poverty so conditioned him to.There are enough case studies to stand that down. The millionaire founder of IKEA lives a spartan life. He flies economy class, and still drives his 1992 Volvo 244 of which he has two.

Warren Buffet, reputedly the second richest human being on planet earth is still living in a three bedroom he bought for $30,500 in 1958. He drives a Lincoln Town car which those who are conversant with the US know is seen as 'pure water' as it is one of the cheapest there is.....

There are so many other millionaires like that.Frugality can be a choice, so Buhari can have a billion and still chose to live a frugal lifestyle....
    • Hide 16 Replies
    • Chika Omeje "spartan" means: simple and harsh, lacking in anything that makes life easier or more pleasant. You know it comes from Sparta;the powerful Greek city state, where people were not interested in comfort or luxury
So how could you tell the world
Kelechi Deca that Buhari lives a harsh, strict existence, with no frills or superfluous luxuries or pleasures. Usually its going to mean to live a life minus all the frills. a rather basic existence. neither wanting nor needing the lavish extras that many of the materialistic people desire.
    • Kelechi Deca Chika Omeje, check the meaning of living a Spartan lifestyle, not the meaning of Spartan, the two are not the same.... living a Spartan lifestyle means living a life of discipline, self denial, living a simple, frugal, minimalist lifestyle. Eating only what is needed to kept the body fit. And that is the life Buhari is said to be living. I interviewed him in 2004, I was shocked when I got to his house.
    • Chika Omeje So what is the difference between this and what i posted earlier KD? How is a life of '' ''self denial, living a simple, frugal, minimalist lifestyle'' reflected in the list of Buhari's assets above?
    • Kelechi Deca You are still getting it wrong. Why not ask how Warren Buffet is living such a lifestyle even with being the second richest man in the world.....your assumptions are wrong, totally wrong because it is a choice, it means you can live the opposite lifestyle if you so chose....
    • Chika Omeje I think you are the one mixing this up Kelechi.Bringing in Warren Buffet etc is contradicting what Shehu is telling the world.Buffet et al are just following age old business strategy.Wealth is not created just by investing, but also by avoiding unnecessary expenses. It does not make one spartan rather, it makes one frugal. This frugality has helped him grow his wealth year on year.
    • Kelechi Deca How come not all millionaires follow same strategy, how come Donald Trump is not following same strategy, how come only less than 20 billionaires in the world are said to be living frugal lifestyles. It means that it is not the common path, contrary to your view..
    • Osita Udenson Chika, I am with Kelechi on this one. The question is what is his lifestyle relative to his wealth?
    • Chika Omeje Fair enough Osi,his lifestyle as long as we know doesn't suggest anything like him living a spartan life. That statement is unfortunate in a country where people die because they do not have money to buy prescribed drugs or even food.
    • Olanike Onyekachi Adexa And it's Buhari's fault that the people don't have enough to buy drugs. Maybe he should donate all his wealth and money to hospitals. Smh

    • Oluwatoyin Vincent Adepoju I wonder if Kelechi Deca and others who share his views are not being inaccurate on what 'lifestyle' means.

Lifestyle refers to the totality of all your activities as demonstrating your attitude to life.

Can you cannot be spartan and be wealthy?

      Perhaps.

But in the context of Nigeria, where the issue is wealth acquisition in terms of attitude to materail belongings, it could be misleading to describe Buhari as spartan.

  • Ademola H Adigun Yomi Okusanya Scott the word is not in the context of comparison. Spartan has a meaning.
  • Ejiro Henry Abeke The assets is declared isn't it?
Both femi and Garba are misfits. They should have been shown the way out long before now.

Now, coming to terms with reality, we can classify the president as relatively poor compared to other past leaders we have in this country and what civil service men/women steal from public offices.

    Well done Mr. President.
    Long live Nigeria!
  • Ken A-Ojie Ademola H Adigun, to absorb context from any definition is naïve and paves the path to error of judgment. That is not rocket science in my opinion
  • Ebus Ichie Chika ur head needs to be examined. Check into the nearest psychiatric hospital. I'm telling you this as a brother, and as a doctor
  • Kelechi Deca Poor people are never said to be living Spartan lifestyles because being poor ensure they live so, only rich people are so described. And we have a long list of such people.

The founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg still drives an Acura because he clai
m it is safe and not ostentatious,he wears the same gray t-shirt and hoodie to work every day. His wedding to longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan took place in his backyard, and the pair was seen digging in at a McDonald's on their Italian honeymoon. He is well known to live a minimalist lifestyle..

As the owner of the technology-service giant, Wipro, Azim Premji is worth more than $12 billion. Yet he is said to monitor the number of toilet-paper rolls used in Wipro facilities and demands that employees switch off the lights when leaving their offices. Premji often takes a three-wheel auto rickshaw(Keke) from the Bangalore airport when returning from business trips, and drives a 1996 Ford.

David Cheriton, the Stanford professor who has an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion from Google shares, hates the idea of living like a billionaire.

Christy Walton, the widow of the heir to Walmart fortune lives a Spartan lifestyle inspite of Walmart money. Her net worth is $27.9 billion.

There are so many others. It is a choice.

  • Fatima Jabir Some people have made up their minds to hate and criticise our president so what ever good he does will never please them. how do we expect to have change or move our country forward when people refuse to accept the president ?agreed he is not a saint but he is one of d best option we have.I want us to realise that Nigeria is bigger than any leader or political group. unless we stop this tribal and religious sentiments we will never get it right. This government has 4yrs tenure and if they don't performs we have the rights to kick them out. so why the noise? We still have to have Nigeria after buhari what happens afterwards is any one thinking about that?pls Nigeria before anything. follow the change train regardless of who is at the helm of affairs. Be a change agent not an enemy.Do your own part to make Nigeria better. or can you run the country better or dear critics?

    • Emenike Nwankwo PhD-Engineering iN A TRUE DEMOCRACY, LEADERS MUST EXPECT NO LESS THAN 50% OF THE PEOPLE TO BE HATEFUL OR NEGATIVE CRITIQUES. BUAHRI IS NO DIFFERENT. geJ AND EVEN obJ WENT THROUGH SAME FATE.

  • Lanre Egbeyemi It is all relative to where you are in your life and where you live.Compared to Babangida who was also a past military Dictator this is Spartan living. In the context of larger Nigerian Society it is not.I bet put together His total assets in us$ terms will be less than $2m again in the larger world economic context this is not much

  • Emenike Nwankwo PhD-Engineering Shehus perspective is the Nigerian politician. He assumed that comparison is with other politician and not Buahri as an average father and citizen. Now they have the task on ensuring that an average nIGERIAN WILL ATTAIN THIS LEVEL OF SPARTAN LIFESTYLE WITH SUCH SUMS IN THEIR ACCOUNTS AND SUCH ASSETS AROUND THE NATION.

  • Nkechi Madonna Brother Ejike this is the mentality that we as Nigerian need to change. The media of the Presidency should not exaggerate or magnify nor feel like it is their responsibility to do so and that if not it will mean they are not doing their job effectively. They have an ethical responsibility to speak facts truthfully. When they do otherwise they create challenges and bring upon themselves and the President unnecessary criticism. All they had to tell the public was what was declared and leave it up to the public to analyze that the President's assets was modest in comparison to his counterparts, not try to make it seem like the President was a poor man or living the life of a monk which he definitely is not. Our President by the assets he has declared falls into the privileged and elite class. How many average Nigerians can boost of the number of homes or cars or landed property or shares that he has? Remain blessed.
