USA Africa Dialogue Series - Islamic Manuscript Collections in Conflict Zones: Safeguarding Written Heritage Short Course

This autumn, The Islamic Manuscript Association, in partnership with the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), will hold the first in a series of intensive short courses on cultural property protection (CPP) in Whitehall, London from 5 to 7 October 2015. 

The course, Islamic Manuscript Collections in Conflict Zones: Safeguarding Written Heritage, led by Dr Joris Kila, Chairman of the International Military Cultural Resources Working Group, will feature more than ten speakers drawn together for their theoretical and practical knowledge and diverse field experience. Case studies will examine incidents of manuscript and book destruction in Bosnia, Iraq, Libya, and Mali, while presentations and roundtables will survey the legal aspects of cultural property protection, military involvement, the destruction of memory, and the way forward. Topics covered will include the 1954 Hague Convention; military operational planning processes; prosecuting cultural property crimes; developing and implementing no-strike lists; iconoclasm and the erasure of cultural memory; and looting and the trafficking of cultural artefacts.
