Subject: [Wanazuoni] Open Book Publishers
Salaam,There have been ongoing debates re how expensive academic knowledge is becoming. Interestingly, even top universities in the world such as Harvard can longer afford the vast cost of academic journal descriptions. The academic knowledge is becoming extremely expensive while publishing companies are making staggering profits.Subsequently, some activists and scholars are raising voices for more 'open access' publications and protest to expensive publishing networks. With costly journal subscription fees Harvard University and Princeton encourage its faculty members to go 'open access' and "resign from publications that keep articles behind paywalls". Despite resistance to open access and scepticism on scientific quality of open access journals, research bodies, councils and publishing companies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council, Macmillan, Public Library of Science, Medknow, Nature Communications, The Wellcome Trust, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada are supporting the movement. However, so far open access has expanded in the realm of journal publications, and rarely with books. But, one initiative called 'Open Book Publishers', founded by a small group of academics at the University of Cambridge is changing the game. Therefore the future of publishing looks promising, as even the US government under "Obama's administration have declared that government-funded research papers should be made freely available within 12 months of publication".Check out their website for more details and free book :-) http://www.openbookpublishers.com/section/14/1/aboutAll the best.
