| Chidi Anthony Opara <chidi.opara@gmail.com>: Nov 02 10:15PM +0100 IBK, Satan drank blood because "those surrogates of Satan" controlled the paraphernalia of violence. In the uprising to come, the gods will fight on the side of the oppressed people. Thanks all the same for your concern for me, brother. CAO. | Cornelius Hamelberg <corneliushamelberg@gmail.com>: Nov 02 01:42PM -0800 Chidi, You say that I -"*have the right*" - to interpret the poem (*any poem*) the way I choose to and *you have* *the right to write* the way that you choose to. I should hope that this right is not limited to just poetry, or even scripture… This is not poetry: I can imagine you arriving at Ben-Gurion Airport waving your placard "*Hitler is not hell*" and being summarily whisked off by some Shin Bet security agents, for interrogation, maybe as *an infiltrator* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&hl=en-GB&rlz=1T4VRHB_svSE642SE642&q=Israel+%3A+infiltrators&oq=Israel+%3A+infiltrators&gs_l=serp.3..0j0i22i10i30j0i22i30.103948.110477.0.110924.21.20.0.1.1.0.131.1343.17j1.18.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..2.19.1342.3GuQVYAUYQU>. At which point I hope that you don't tell them what you told me: *"Looka here, I am not in poetry to please you!"* Memorable words from IBK also here: "*sedition is an offence against the very essence of the state and many a poet has paid dearly for it in the past*." Perhaps he has in mind from the days of yore, *Muhammad's dead poets' society* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&site=&source=hp&q=Muhammad%27s+dead+poets+society&oq=Muhammad%27s+dead+poets+society&gs_l=hp.3...2945.2945.0.4944.2.2.0.0.0.0.130.242.0j2.2.0....0...1c..64.hp..2.0.0.0.UifVtOVx9Vo> ? "Hitler" is now the symbolic name of an unpopular boss or any local dictator (just as Mobutu's son as minister of information in Zaire was known as "Saddam Hussein"). As a poet, you do have your way with words: " *savages"* who invaded Africa", " *crooked clergies"*," *immoral Imams*", "*rogue royalties" *, even referring to holy missionaries as "*surrogates of Satan*"etc. Hopefully, a time will not come when you start referring to Brother Buhari as *Saddam* or Hitler*, the only begotten son of Lucifer*. We understand how conveniently some people grope in the darkness to fetch their dark, demonic symbols, but it's not just about poetry, even if Adorno, whatever many million dimensions he may have had in his head, said that "*to write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&hl=en-GB&rlz=1T4VRHB_svSE642SE642&q=Adorno++%3A+to+write+a+poem+after+auschwitz+is+barbaric&oq=Adorno++%3A+to+write+a+poem+after+auschwitz+is+barbaric&gs_l=serp.12..0i30.6829.11396.0.13627.5.5.0.0.0.0.121.360.4j1.5.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..0.5.356.x7CXA2LSIc8> " Let me make this clear again: Without even reading your poem, it's the title "*Hitler is not in hell*" that grates - even if that headline could have been the beginning of a periodic sentence ending with the punchline "he is in a far hotter place"… *Hitler's Holocaust* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&site=&source=hp&q=Hitler%E2%80%99s+Holocaust+&oq=Hitler%E2%80%99s+Holocaust+&gs_l=hp.3..0i22i30l10.5130.5130.0.7169.2.2.0.0.0.0.154.267.0j2.2.0....0...1c..64.hp..1.1.153.0.GjDPeKuD-A8> cannot be trivialised. What I gather from Samuel Zalanga's edifying lecture is that we (you and me and all of us) should be sensitive about other people's feelings, tragedies, - not that as you say to me, "*Unfortunately, you sounded as if I am in poetry to please you*." Well, Chidi, why do you think I do *sonnets* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4VRHB_svSE642SE642&q=sonnets> to my Better Half? No, I do not think that you are in poetry just to please me –and I'm not into *the gestalt prayer* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&q=the+gestalt+prayer&oq=+The+Gestalt+prayer&gs_l=serp.1.0.0j0i30j0i5i30.2748.4099.0.14021.5.5.0.0.0.0.125.560.1j4.5.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..0.5.556.BeCJJ7ofP1c> : "I do my thing and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, And you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful. If not, it can't be helped." From time to time there have been headlines such as *Hitler is alive* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&q=Hitler+is+alive&oq=Hitler+is+alive&gs_l=serp.12..0i7i30l3j0i30l2j0i5i30l3.5198.5198.0.7435.1.1.0.0.0.0.136.136.0j1.1.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..0.1.134.JFCAEHmhKDI> (not yet in hell) -the hoary old villain still on earth –if true , causing Nazi hunter *Simon Wiesenthal* <https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&hl=en-GB&rlz=1T4VRHB_svSE642SE642&q=Simon+Wiesenthal&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0CBsQvwUoAGoVChMIw9iio_XxyAIVx-xyCh2hZgB9&biw=1024&bih=676> to go out and bring him to justice… God willing, we (*you and I* <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSrTQeIqpKk>) will soon be imbibing some fish stew and coconut juice together…. Later. Cornelius *We Sweden* <http://www.thelocal.se/blogs/corneliushamelberg/> On Sunday, 1 November 2015 20:38:02 UTC+1, Chidi Anthony Opara wrote: |

| Olufunke Adeboye <funks29adeboye@yahoo.co.uk>: Nov 02 09:02PM I received the news of the death of Prof. JDY Peel with great shock. He was such a great scholar. I met him through the late Prof JF Ade-Ajayi, who supervised my PhD thesis. John was very close to the Ajayi family. He read drafts of my PhD thesis in the early 90s and gave me very useful suggestions for revision. Since then, he has been a very worthy mentor and dear friend, encouraging me in my career at very turn. I have had very rewarding intellectual exchanges with him. John was a very fine scholar. We shall all miss him. May God comfort his family and other members of the Africanist community. Olufunke Adeboye, Ph.D Professor and Head, Department of History and Strategic Studies, University of Lagos, Nigeria. | Michael Afolayan <mafolayan@yahoo.com>: Nov 02 09:08PM What a loss! A big one indeed. I have somewhere on my desk a paper on Yoruba religion and Islam, which he wrote and sent to me a short while ago, wanting my feedback. Alas, I never did. What a shame! May those Baba JDY left behind be comforted. That's one jumbo tree pulled out of the endangered forest of Africa's academy. Wow!!! Michael O. Afolayan &n |
