RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - On the Matter of the Untimely Departure of Prince Abubakar Audu of Kogi State, "Igbo" Prince of Igala-land {RE: The ICON Gov. Audu is IGBO..true true

People will always find one reason or the other to associate or dissociate themselves with a person depending on the interest they have at stake at stake. That the recently demised Prince Abubakar Audu of Kogi State is now proclaimed Eze  Ndigbo of Igala by certain interested parties is no news. Major Patrick Chukwuma Nzeogwu was once denied to be an ethnic Igbo. Chinua Achebe wrote, "But by killing Sir Ahmadu Bello, Nzeogwu and the other coup plotters had put themselves on collision course with the religious, ethnic and political ramifications of such an action ... Superficially it was understandable to conclude that this was indeed *an Igbo coup*." Explaining why it was not *an Igbo coup* Achebe wrote, "One of the Majors was Yoruba, and Nzeogwu himself was Igbo in name only. Not only was he born in Kaduna, the capital of the Muslim North, he was widely known as someone who saw himself as a Northerner, spoke fluent Hausa and little Igbo, and wore the Northern traditional dress when not in uniform." That was how Achebe denied Nzeogwu of being an ethnic Igbo. Traditionally in Nigeria, the village or town of a father is automatically the home village/town of his children. The ethnic belonging of a child in Nigeria is marked in the name given by the parents (father) irrespective of where in Nigeria the child is born. Genealogically, the grandfather of Patrick Chukwuma Nzeogwu, Obi Nzeogwu hailed from Umuomake quarters in Obodogwu village, one of the villages contained in Okpanam in the old Asaba Division. James Okafor Nzeogwu, the father of Chukwuma Nzeogwu, was the son of Obi Nzeogwu. Elizabeth Mgbeke, Chukwuma's mother hailed from the village of Ugbolu near Okpanam and got married to James Okafor Nzeogwu in 1936 in Kaduna. Genealogically, paternally and by name, Patrick Chukwuma Nzeogwu was a full-fledged Igbo. Similarly, the late Abubakar Audu by paternity, genealogy and name could not have been an ethnic Igbo but a full-fledged ethnic Igala.

I am not posting my colors here but Ogbonicha, Alloma, and Ofu are Igbo sounding names and have meaning in Igbo too. I realize that the names may also be Igala and have meaning in the language. The Igbo and Igala have been neighbors for hundreds of years. Has there been cross-settlement among these neighbors in their communities over time? Yes. Has there been cross-assimilation in their communities? Yes. Do they share some vocabulary? Yes. Did they trade with each other? Yes. They have cultural links. Are there some Igbo today who might have been Igala originally? Yes. Is the opposite also true? Yes. I could go on.

Some communities in Anambra, Delta, and Enugu states have oral historical accounts of Igbo and Igala cross migration. There is a fully assimilated Igala settler community in Onitsha, Anambra State for example. Could Abubakar Audu have been an ethnic Igbo? May be. Was he an ethnic Igala? Possibly. Ethnic identity like citizenship it seems to me, is usually based on blood or acquisition in other words through ancestry or naturalization respectively. It is not clear which of the above applied to Audu. Should it matter what he was? Everyone must decide for themselves.

It is tempting to rely on local anthropologists and other experts to speak definitively on matters such as this one.  In these days of ethnic chauvinism, it is doubtful that always allow all facts to come into play in their determination of what is the case.  Remember the Benin- Ife debate? Which was the primogenitor? The Yoruba say Ife. The Edo say Benin. What does your truly say? It depends on who you talk with.

Leye:

Obi Nwakanma is flat out wrong to say Ausu was Igbo.  In fact, judging from the arrow of time and geography and  history, the Igbo fellows Obi Nwakanma and Ken Asagwars are anthropoogically Igala, while Audu is not Igbo.

And there you have it.

 My People:

 First, strange deaths
happen, and one of such is what happened to once-and-future
Governor Prince Abubakar Audu just when he expired upon
announcement of the inconclusiveness of his latest
 governorship bid in Kogi State.

 Yes, conspiracy theories
will abound, but this was how he was destined to
 die....under wildly strange circumstances.

 May his gentle soul rest
 in peace.

 And next comes Obi
Nwakanma, the Forrest Gump of Igbo-Nigerian history, who
strikes again, to disclose that the Igala  Prince Au,du
Abubakar, from Ofu Local Government in Kogi State, is indeed
  "Igbo'' - ethnically, culturally or
 politically?

 Odikwa egwu!

 Well,  this is a sad
 departure...and an interesting (but dubious)
 connection.....with lawyers  (Keyamo, Emetulu, Okoi
Obla, etc.) taking over to test Nigeria's Constitution
once again....and a welcoming test for new INEC Chair Yakubu
 Mahmood.

 And there you have it.

concocted tale full of thrash and libel told by enemies of
democracy, my initial decision was to ignore it but on a
second thought I have decided to put the record straight.
The story which is written in poor English purported that
 Gov Rochas Okorocha, the
Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum gave an interview
where he accused Tinubu of being behind the death of Kogi
state APC candidate, late Prince Abubakar Audu. Firstly Gov
Rochas Okorocha spent the better part of yesterday, Sunday
 22nd November, 2015 till
about 7 pm chairing a stakeholders forum of South-East
Leaders and returned to Owerri same night, it is bewildering
where and when he gave the interview which thrended same
night on social media? Secondly, Prince Abubakar Audu is not
yet a member of APC Governors
Forum and Gov Okorocha could not have granted the interview
on that score. The family of Prince Abubakar Audu has not
blamed anyone for the death of their son neither is Gov
Okorocha a member of the Audu family. The story was written
 as an interview Governor
Okorocha granted yet no medium was mentioned. Can one grant
interview to thin air? The purported interview is a wicked
machination of people who are envious of the towering
profile of Gov Rochas Okorocha and aim at bringing him at
 loggerheads with leaders
of the Party especially Sen Bola Tinubu, a former Governor
of Lagos State and a man Gov Okorocha holds in very high
esteem. It is also remarkable that the story has no source
but emanated from the Facebook wall of a PDP apologist who
 must have been paid by
her handlers to cause disaffection within APC family. The
story started by referring to Gov Okorocha as a former
Special Adviser to former President Obasanjo on Inter -Party
Affairs, an office he held several years ago indicating that
 the authors do not know
him well enough. I wish at this point to remind the
harbingers of libelous, concocted and devious news on social

Tinubu Poisoned Audu – APC Gov. Okorocha | The
 ICON

 Absolute
 rubbish from Okorocha .

 Information
coming in from This Day suggests Audu was actually poisoned.
He did not die of a heart attack. Audu was rushed to the
 hospital and repeatedly vomiting
blood which he then passed out and died.

 Word going
around now is that Tinubu has a hand in his death. It is
said that Audu's poisoning was pre-planned in order to
impose Bola Tinubu's boy James Abiodun
Faleke from Okun-Yoruba – Abubakar Audu's running mate
 – on Kogi. Although from Kogi, Faleke was a member of
theHouse of Representatives, representing Ikeja Federal
 Constituency, Lagos.

 MEANWHILE,
the Special Adviser on Inter-Party affairs to former
President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor of Imo State, Mr.
 Rochas Okorocha [above] has alleged
that the national leader of the All Progressive Congress
(APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu among others killed the
Kogi State governorship candidate, Alhaji Abulbakah
 Audu.

 Okorocha, who
accused the national leadership of the party, Tinubu, said
the sudden death must have been pre-programmed by the
 mentioned.

 He said:
"We are not unaware of their antics and plans to field
Audu's deputy, Mr. Abiodun Faleke, after the programmed
 death his boss.

 "Party
apart, we are all human beings and such plot against fellow
human is in itself inhuman and devilish."

 Speaking on
phone with Mr. Okorocha shortly after the sad news, he
described the death of Audu as untimely and inhuman at this
moment for the national party, APC.

 "How can we
be mourning the departure of a guber candidate in Kogi State
and Tinubu supporters are jubilating in Lagos?

 "Do we
further need any interpreter to interpret how and where the
 sudden death emanated from?

 "No!

 "Such is
how we could manage our intra-party clash of interests in
 APC.

 "It is
 unfortunate," Okorocha said.
