...I don't know about presidential democracies but Keith Vaz, Frank Field and Margaret Hodge spring to mind as Labour MPs who chaired committees in the British House of Commons. Indeed, I believe that there is one committee (public accounts?) that is always chaired by an opposition member of parliament. In our own National Assembly Abike Dabiri chaired the House Committee on the Diaspora despite not being a PDP member. So ours would probably be an unusual democracy if opposition members were not allowed to chair some committees.
AyoI invite you to follow me on Twitter @naijamaThis is interesting to say the least. Is there any democracy, apart from Nigeria, where this happens? Where members of opposition are allowed to chair standing committees in parliament? Are there not enough members from the majority party to chair these committees? In democracy especially like ours where independent candidates can't stand for elections, is one not supposed to be elected based on manifesto of one's party, and when in parliament drive the same manifesto? If the opposition control many critical committees, as it is now, and are opposed to the ruling party policies, how would such policies be achieved? And why would the ruling party reward the opposition even over its members? This democracy is really crazy.Thanks,Bayo.On Sat, Oct 31, 2015 at 5:29 AM, Mobolaji Aluko <alukome@gmail.com> wrote:STAR INFORMATION: House of Representatives 8th Assembly Standing CommitteesCourtesy: Nigerianmuse.comOctober 31, 2015Leadership Distribution by State and by Geo-political zone
