Vagina Mysticism and the Erotic Universe of Ruth Bircham
Book by Oluwatoyin Vincent Adepoju
This book responds through imaginative creation and critical exposition to the painting of Ruth Bircham.
This relationship with Bircham's art is conducted in terms of a mystical quest, the search for union or direct encounter with ultimate reality.
How may the vagina be understood in relation to mystical theory and practice?
This subject, developed with exquisite grace and depth in the body of thought and practice in Hinduism and Buddhism known as Tantra and its affiliates, is here explored through the work of an artist whose painting is marked by powerful vagina depictions.
In doing this, the volume expands the scope of vagina symbolism in the classic Tantric text the Yoni Tantra, correlating this explicitly with a description of the character of mysticism and grounds the mystical orientation in detailed engagement with Ruth Bircham's vagina art.
This work, therefore, takes further a school of mysticism, vagina mysticism, as well as presents perhaps the richest study of Ruth Bircham's work so far, relating it to a broad spectrum of thought and art in various civilizations, from Asia, to Africa and Europe, among others.
