It is my pleasure to announce the publication of Africa: An Encyclopedia of Culture and Society.  This three-volume set comprises fifty-four entries, one for each country on the African continent and its associated islands.  1366 pages long, averaging roughly 14,000 words each, entries are considerably more in depth than in most encyclopedic works.  Each one includes sections on religion, social customs, lifestyle and leisure, employment, cuisine, dress, sports and games, festivals and holidays, music and dance, visual art, architecture and housing, literature and oral traditions, media, and gender roles, marriage, and family.  Entries also feature country maps, captioned illustrations, tables, and fact boxes highlighting key information and unique and interesting facts about each country.  Africa: An Encyclopedia of Culture and Society challenges stereotypes about Africa and Africans, highlights the diversity amongst and within Africa’s peoples, and provides a nuanced yet approachable window into African life, events, and institutions.  For these reasons, Africa is a valuable resource to scholars and students, alike.

Africa: An Encyclopedia of Culture and Society benefits from the scholarship of an esteemed gathering of academics, many of whom hail from the countries explored in these volumes:
