I still wonder why at this age there is no single private university in Kano state. If Atiku alone can do it in Adamawa state, why can't Dantatas, Dangotes, Isyaka Rabius etcetra, do it in Kano? If Katsinawa can come up with Al-Qalam university, what stops Kanawa from starting Rumfa/Bagauda university?
Today we have Covenant and Redeemers being managed by pentecostal churches, yet neither JNI or SCIA, nor other Islamic groups (MSS, Izala, Dariqa) have ventured into this very rewarding enterprises in education. Yes, you do not have to remind me of Al-Hikmah university and Fountain university- I am quite aware of their existence and religious affliation. But here I am concern about the distribution, and the patent lack of interest being exhibited by Kano's elites. Nothing underscores such nonchalance more than having a Kano state indigene pioneering private university in Niger republic, with hundreds of students crossing the boarder from Nigeria to secure admission there. You can call that capital flight, but to me it is something to worry about. If our rich (wo)men fail to invest early in this, they may soon end up as commission earners. They were in slumber when someone who is apparently business savvy came here and built Ado Bayero mall at the time all that was vogue was small "rumfunan haya". Now we all troop there to buy stuff or rent business premises.
Kano is a gold mine- every business thrives here. More importantly, there are so many virgin areas in the hub of trans-Saharan trade. We need a befitting private university. Please, give us at least one! Our emirate should also initiate and bankroll Dabo University as its project.
