Prof. Catherine Pickstock (University of Cambridge)
'Back is forward, distance is proximity: the ultimate unity of Dante's spiritual cosmos' (Inferno 31, Purgatorio 31, Paradiso 31)
6pm in the Winstanley Lecture Theatre, Trinity College, Cambridge
Attraction-
The latest in an amazing series of lectures, preceded by a scintillating workshop in the magnificent surroundings of the Master's Lodge at Trinity, College, Cambridge, involving a video conference with other university teams discussing Dante's work.
The lecture is part of a multi-year project on one of the greatest human achievements, 13th-14th century Italian poet, politician and soldier Dante Alighieri's poetic voyage in the Divine Comedy, from one end of the cosmos to its core in the unity of the creator of the universe and the human being as understood in his presentation of Christian thought, having journeyed through an encyclopedic depiction of the medieval European world view, dramatised in terms of spellbinding visualizations of scenes and characters, in terms of a gripping plot and magical poetry, along with absolutely lofty ideational exploration.
The speaker, Catherine Pickstock, is a professor of metaphysics and poetics, meaning she will bring to the lecture her understanding of the conjunction of these two disciplines in enabling Dante's sublime achievement.
Great thanks to Professor Robin Kirkpatrick, magnificent Dante expositor and translator of Dante's Divine Comedy, and his PhD student K.L. Powlesland, for introducing me to this lecture series and workshop.
