O.F.O. ESTABLISHES MICRO-FINANCE FOR YOUTH IN NIGERIA
The non-profit organization known as Organizing For Opportunities (OFO) has established a micro-financing program to enable Nigerian youth pursue entrepreneurial and/or educational endeavors. The first set of grants were awarded in January for the 2016 calendar year at Mbaise, Imo State, according to Barrister Chijioke Ugorji, Fund Manager for the program.
Nineteen young people received a minimum of twenty-five thousand Naira to fund various entrepreneurial and educational pursuits. The program provides these funds for a term of 9 months during which no interest is charged on the money received. Barrister Ugorji said "this is the pilot stage of the program; the hope is that this set of beneficiaries will return the money in 9 months so that we may recycle the funds for others." According to Barrister Ugorji, after the pilot stage, the program will be evaluated for expansion to other communities.
Organizing For Opportunities was established in 2015 to provide job training, leadership and entrepreneurial development, and micro-financing for eligible youth. The organization was founded by the scholar activist, Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji, who is based both in Nigeria and in the United States of America where he studied. An author and publisher of several books, Dr. Ugorji is currently the Executive Director of the New Jersey-based African Writers Endowment, Inc., Publisher of the international imprint of Sungai Books, and CEO of the Nigerian-based Twenty Pounds Films.
