Angry troops block GOC over supplies
By Shehu Abubakar, Maiduguri | Publish Date: Apr 2 2016 5:00AM
Angry soldiers Thursday prevented the acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 7 Division, Maiduguri, Brigadier-General Victor Eziegwu from leaving a remote Borno village when he went there on a helicopter to address them. The soldiers, drawn from 154 and 155 TF Battalions dislodged insurgents occupying Alagarno, a remote town and were allegedly left there without food and water.
The troops are said to have performed their duties effectively, according to a source, taking over Alagarno after a fierce battle with insurgents.
The source said: "There is no food or water and because of the minefields around the area, the only means to enter Alagarno safely is by air. No vehicle can go in and out now because of the mines. Instead of them to use helicopters to supply us water and food as they did when mines were planted along Bama to Banki road, the GOC used a helicopter to come and address us over irrelevant issues, warning us unnecessarily rather than address issues bordering on our welfare."
According to the source, when the GOC was done addressing them and was about leaving, troops blocked the helicopter and forced the pilot to disembark.
Responding to a text message seeking confirmation, Deputy Director, Army Public Relation of 7 Division, Maiduguri, Colonel Mustapha Anka said he does not have details, as he did not receive any official briefing on the matter.
