Subject: [NaijaPolitics] BUHARI MUST RESTRAIN HIS CATTLE-HERDERS KINSFOLK TO AVERT CIVIL WAR - HURIWA
Southward advance of the Sahara Desert forces the nomadic Fulani cattle herders to leave their ancestral home in the arid North to seek greener pastures amidst the arable agricultural lands belonging to the indigenous populations of the Middle Belt and territories further south in the Eastern and Western Regions. The Fulani nomadic culture regards all lands as open grazing grounds and would not give a hoot about driving herds of cattle through planted fields of food crops which belong to the settled tribal groups of the Middle Belt. Massive crop destruction by Fulani herds elicits the vehement complaints and resistance of owners of the destroyed farmlands. Such complains are often regarded as unwarranted impediment to right of passage to which the Fulani herders respond with deadly force.
To the nomadic Fulani, cattle are worth as much as humans, if not more. Any threat to their herds' comfort and right of access, even through fully planted farmlands, are considered hostile affronts which must never be tolerated. Ordinarily, the Fulani have no loyalty to any given piece of real estate on this earth since their livelihood depends on constant movement to wherever their herds can find fresh fodder and water. Is there still any mystery as to why the Land Use Decree of 1978 was promulgated for the sole purpose of confiscating the lands of all indigenous peoples of Nigeria and bringing same under the direct ownership of the central government which was under control of the Fulani and their vassals up North for the past 50 years? Perhaps, that obnoxious Land Use decree, which was arbitrarily incorporated into the subsisting 1999 Constitution by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, makes today's Fulani cattle herders to regard every square inch of Nigerian territory and all its contents to belong to Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara etc.

A pro-democracy group, the Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria, HURIWA has warned that Nigeria may be dangerously approaching the precipice of civil war in view of "the seeming conspiratorial silence and clear case of orchestrated ineptitude and inaction" of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led central government to the dare-devil activities and blood cuddling violence of armed Fulani herdsmen. …………….…read more
