| | | | | | | | All in all, it's been a tough week for tax shelters. In business news, pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Allergan called off a multibillion-dollar merger after the U.S. Treasury Department issued new rules governing "inversions" -- a practice in which U.S. companies agree to be acquired by foreign companies, thus reducing their corporate tax burdens. But the big story of the week -- a massive information leak with ripples now being felt around the world -- was the disclosure of the so-called "Panama Papers," outlining the dealings of the Mossack Fonseca law firm and allegedly showing how it helped wealthy clients funnel money into offshore accounts and secretive shell companies. The data trove -- some 11.5 million financial and legal records -- is shot through with the names of celebrities, political officials and criminals alike. More than 214,000 offshore entities mentioned in the documents provide conections to people in more than 200 countries and territories, including current and former world leaders. Investigations and political responses are already taking shape. And the fallout from the Panama Papers will be felt in different ways around the world. Stratfor analysts have published a region-by-region look at the geopolitical implications of the leak, which you can read for free on our website.
