USA Africa Dialogue Series - Justice for Professor Ibrahim Abdullah

Greetings Everyone,

For several months now, numerous organizations and institutions have made countless calls on authorities in Sierra Leone to help resolve the matter between Prof. Ibrahim Abdullah and the Fourah Bay College administration. A few months ago, a group of eminent scholars from across the world sent a petition to the president of Sierra Leone, who serves as the chancellor of the University, asking him to intervene in settling the matter between Prof. Abdullah and the Fourah Bay College administration. Prof. Abdullah himself sent a personal letter of complaint to the president's office requesting that his right to employment be respected. All international and national appeals to have the president and other educational authorities in Sierra Leone to address the problem have so far failed.

Now Prof. Abdullah's last resort is to pursue a legal case in the courts of Sierra Leone in defense of his rights to employment and for the university to uphold the sacred principle of academic freedom. The legal case costs money.

We as friends, students and supporters of Prof. Ibrahim Abdullah, have therefore decided to launch this appeal for funds to assist him in his struggle for academic freedom and justice in Sierra Leone.

Our goal is to raise US$20, 000.

These resources will be used to pay off some of the legal fees involved in retaining lawyers representing Prof. Abdullah. It is the leaders of Sierra Leone's duties to uphold standards and fairness, especially when it comes to education.
