USA Africa Dialogue Series - Science Education in Indigenous Languages Attainable – WITH MUCH WORK. – Part 1

A is for APPLE??

From the moment a Yoruba infant sees the alphabet A and thinks of apple, we the parents have dropped the ball. We have started preparing the child to take the never ending journey to economic dependency on the white man!!!

This new vogue of wanting our wards to learn English as early as possible is not only not beneficial to the child but also actually damaging to his psyche.

The main purpose of a child's exposure to the sciences at an early age is so he can begin to appreciate his surroundings and not to enable him to know science words in English of any other foreign language.

A Yoruba child should be taught about different kinds of butterflies, ants, trees, vegetables, animals, birds, herbs, fruits, etc. that exist in his immediate vicinity. He must learn to appreciate how tadpoles become frogs; how seeds become trees; how cotton becomes cloth; how eggs become chickens; etc.

He must be taught all these things and more beginning as early as he can appreciate any form of learning. He must be taught all these things IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE. That is the only way he can learn.

But why do we, parents, choose to do things the other way around? Why do we want to expose a child to a foreign culture and language even before he masters his own?

Before we start addressing the issue of teaching science in the indigenous languages, we need to understand the psychology that makes us do these things that are, on the surface, highly illogical but, like Pavlov's dog, we do without thinking.
