The Yoruba Science and Technology Encyclopedia -
Yoruba-scipedia.wikidot.com. . is now fully operational. Several new
topics have been added to this ever evolving internet compendium. And
the contents have now been made easier to access by classifying all
topics according to subject areas: Mathematics, Physics, Biology,
Health Science, Nature Study, etc. All topics are written in Yoruba
and English and most have a PDF file attached wherever possible.
The Encyclopedia is a result of more than a decade of research, with a
vision of making Yoruba a scientifically developed language. This way,
the benefits and advantages of science and technology can be
transferred in an easier, faster, wider, and more robust way than it
is done presently. It is also envisioned that delivery of science and
technology education in the primary and secondary schools, and even
tertiary institutions to the Yoruba speaking population can be made
more efficient with the incorporation of their indigenous language.
Many years ago, it has been scientifically proven that the use of
indigenous languages in transferring scientific knowledge in the
schools is more efficient than the use of another language. However,
developing content in the indigenous languages has been a major
setback. The objectives of creating this encyclopedia are therefore to
continuously develop materials and content for use in the propagation
of science and technology using the Yoruba language by:
i. translating available scientific and technological body of
knowledge for the benefit of the Yoruba masses, particularly those
that do not speak a foreign scientifically developed language;
ii. enhancing the training of our students in preprimary, primary and
secondary schools by providing avenues to access information;
iii. developing materials that will enhance the propagation of science
and technology in the schools
It is hoped that further research in the development of the Yoruba
language to make it easily usable for science and technology
propagation will be done in the areas of terminology development, and
the development of other teaching materials.
The Yoruba Science and Technology Encyclopedia is envisaged as a
repository for works by science, technology, engineering, medicine,
mathematics educators, professional and other science related
authors to create materials that will educate our youths and others
who are currently inhibited by their abilities to use English or other
foreign languages in assessing scientific information.
Subject matters in the Encyclopedia are presented in an easy to
understand manner. And attempts have been made to explain even highly
intricate scientific ideas in a lay man's language. Articles are short
enough to digest within a reasonable time.
New areas that include Health Science, and Nature Study have been
added for the interest of the masses at large, and our children and
grandchildren in particular. It is therefore a wonderful avenue to
expose our children to our language and at the same time, spend some
time learning about the wonders of nature.
Besides expanding our language, Yoruba - in the science and technology
area, this encyclopedia also serves as a useful tool in giving our
young ones a place to do research in various subject areas without
being restricted by their inability to read or write English well.
