Folks,

We need to understand that this 'Niger Delta' term
that we use as if someone just coined it out of nothing is
strictly a description of a structural basin created by a
series of geological activities that have occurred over time
at the mouth of River Niger
hence the name Niger Delta.

We therefore cannot simply limit the term to a few states.
In the same manner we cannot include any state ‎outside
the geological formation. The phenomenon of a delta has its
beginnings and it's boundaries. The end cannot be
determined as it may continue to
build on.

Now to address the point of the ‎anonymous tipster: it is
incredible not to have at least included Akwa Ibom State,
the largest oil/gas producer in his/her list. Of course
the Niger Delta goes way beyond the States he mentioned.
He/she also aluded to a confusion
arising from the naming of the NDDC. The NDDC to my mind is
aptly named as all the areas covered by its activities are
restricted to areas within the geological Niger
Delta.

Anyway, I submit that it is erroneous to use the term Niger
Delta and exclude state and areas where the formations from
where oil/gas are produced belong to the same geological
dynamics that created the delta.

To GSM, Anambra, which is principally a gas zone, is not
part of the geological structure of the Niger Delta. It
belongs to the Anambra Basin which is older than the Niger
Delta. Likewise Lagos does not belong to the Niger Delta
Basin. ‎The basin in which oil
is found in Lagos is the Dahomey Basin, a geological
structure very far from the Niger Delta. Both the Anambra
and Dahomey Basins are older than the Niger Delta
Basin.

Finally it will help if we consider as follows (and please
we need to picture this): the sediments of the Niger Delta
from which oil and gas is produced underlie parts of Cross
River, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Imo, Delta, Edo and Ondo States
while it completely underlies
Rivers and Bayelsa States (at least to the depths drilled
as at today).

Thanks

Maybe this will help, from an "anonymous"

QUOTE

Methinks Niger Delta is
indeed South-South consisting of Bayelsa, Rivers and
Delta.  Confusion comes from the interpretation of Niger
Delta Development Commission (NDDC) that
has delineated 9 states as their Niger Delta region that
should be granted special development program. NDDC should
really be Niger Delta and Oil Producing States Development
Commission. Someone should coin out some acronym for
this.

And there you have
it!

 Godwin Okeke:

 Please do not confuse

 "oil-producing states" with so-called

 "Niger-Delta" or even "South-South"

regions.   Anambra and Lagos are now
"oil-producing

states" - however little they may be producing for
now

 -  as Borno (and my Ekiti) will be if and when oil is

discovered in the Chad Basin (and Ode Basin).

 Until then, give us space,

 biko....

 And there you

 have it.

  Dear GSM,

I have a contribution to make on the issue you have

highlighted. First off, it is pertinent that I state
that

 I

am not holding brief for Bolaji.

It is my belief that Bolaji was highlighting the
states

 of

the Niger Delta in which he was actively involved in

 the

past five years and not stating that the Niger Delta

 had

  only four states.

I do agree that the statement - "As you are
fully

 aware, I spent

early 2011 to early 2016 living in Bayelsa State,
starting

 a

new federal university,  and traveling several times

between the four Niger-Delta region of Bayelsa,
Rivers,

Delta and Ondo states" - might be taken to mean

that the Niger Delta is constituted of only the four

mentioned states. For most, if not all, on this forum
I

 am

certain that it is known that the ND goes beyond the

 four

  states.

However, my understanding of the term 'Niger

 Delta'

is geological. It has come to also wear a robe of

geo-political identification. If it is accepted that
it

 is

the geological term that best defines the Niger Delta

 then

nine states clearly stand to be so described -

  Cross River

  Akwa Ibom

  Rivers

  Imo

  Abia

  Bayelsa

  Delta

  Ondo

  Edo

Geo-politically the South South region had usually
been

taken as synonymous to the Niger Delta. This is

 erroneous.

Ondo (SW) and Cross River (SS) States bound the ND in

its western and eastern extremities respectively
while

 Abia

(SE) and Imo (SE) 'provide' its

  northern boundary.

Note that some hydrocarbons have been found in
Anambra

State. Geologically, the make up of the sediments in

 which

the hydrocarbons in Anambra are found may not fall

 within

the formation age of the Niger Delta. I am not able
to

attribute the formation from which these hydrocarbons

 are

found as I do not have information on this.

Concluding therefore, all the nine states listed
above

  constitute the ND.

  Thanks.

  >   militants, have long complained of poverty.

  >   "It's obviously a major

  >   concern," Hammond told reporters on the

 sidelines

  of a

  >   regional security conference in Abuja when

 asked

  about the

  >   situation.

  >   "The idea

  >   that your answer is by moving big chunks of

 the

  Nigerian

  >   Army to the Delta simply doesn't work,"
he

 said,

  >  adding

  >   that the Army did not have the capacity
while

  fighting

  >  Boko

  >   Haram jihadists in the north. "It won't
deal

 with

  the

  >   underlying issues."

  >   "Buhari has got to show as a

  >   president from the north that he is not
ignoring

 the

  >  Delta,

  >   that he is engaging with the challenges in
the

  Delta,"

  >   Hammond said.

  >   Buhari

  >   is a Muslim from the north who has not
visited

 the

  >  Christian

  >   Delta since taking office a year ago,

 something

  >  highlighted

  >   by a militant group, the Niger Delta
Avengers,

 which

  has

  >   claimed a string of attacks on pipelines.

  >   The group has warned oil firms to

  >   leave the region within two weeks and says
it

 is

  fighting

  >   for independence for the Delta. It has said
it

 wanted

  a

  >   greater share of oil revenues and an end to

 oil

  >   pollution.

  >   The attacks

  >   have driven Nigerian oil output to near a
22-year

 low

  and,

  >   if the violence escalates into another

 insurgency,

  it

  >  could

  >   cripple output in a country facing a growing

  economic

  >   crisis.

  >   Buhari, who

  >   has not commented about not visiting the
Delta,

 has

  >  extended

  >   a multi-million dollar amnesty signed with

 militants

  in

  >  2009

  >   but upset them by ending generous pipeline

  protection

  >   contracts. He also cut the amnesty budget by

 around

  70

  >   percent, which partly funds training for

  >   unemployed.
