Mazi Aduba:
The FGN under Yakubu Gowon declared and waged
a war against the Biafran Army which controlled what
she considered were parts of Nigerian territory between 1967 and 1970.
Bashar al Assad army is currently engaged in a 5 year old
civil war to recover Syrian territories that are currently
occupied and controlled by Syrian rebels, Kurds
and ISIL.
The Sri Lankan government successfully waged a gruesome and bloody
26 year military campaign against
the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (the LTTE also known as the Tamil Tigers)
between may 26, 1983 and May 2009.

Thus the idea of a national government waging a war against
any group that infringes on its sovereignty is a common
occurrence regardless of whether the trespassers are its own nationals
or foreigners.
I believe that the formal 'war' against BH should have been declared
much earlier than when it finally started.
The fight against the BH was unfortunately obstructed during the GEJ years
due to the politicization of the issue by a few northern
Nigerian politicians and the pervasive corruption among the leadership pf the
Nigerian Armed Forces.
Even though the causes of the Nigerian civil war can not be equated with
those that ignited the BH insurgency, (the former being a struggle for self determination
while the former is terrorism inspired by radical Islamic ideology
and theocrac), the government of Nigeria has no choice but to react to these threats
by declaring war to recover Nigerian territories.

*Clears yet another 7 villages in parts of Borno occupied by insurgents The Nigerian Army said on Sunday that its troops of 21 Brigade, 7 Division, had retaken more camps from Boko Baram as the fight to clear Sambisa Forest, in Borno State, of insurgents got revved up. Acting Director., Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, in a statement, revealed that "On Sunday 8th May 2016, the troops cleared 4 villages in the terrorists enclave which include Bala Karege, Goske, Harda and the famous Markas 3. There was no encounter with the terrorists in all the villages as the Boko Haram terrorists have abandoned their huts and ran away." He said "Unfortunately, the troops ran into an ambush at Harda village, while advancing. The resilient troops successfully cleared the ambush without any casualty and proceeded with the operations. "The formation recovered suicide vests and quite a number of high calibre weapons which include; 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Bomb, 18 rounds of 23mm Shilka ammunition, 1 Barrel of AK-47 rifle, 1 Extra-barrel of General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 3 AK-47 rifle magazines, metal link of 12.7mm ammunition and a heavy-duty solar panel battery. "The troops also recovered 10 vehicles and 50 motorcycles belonging to the fleeing terrorists. "In a related development, Boko Haram terrorists from another part of Sambisa forest, were reported to have taken advantage of the heavy downpour that occurred to move closer to the troops. "However, the troops were very vigilant as they decisively and successfully dealt with the intruders. So far, 2 vehicles were recovered from Boko Haram terrorists and over 8 Boko Haram terrorists' bodies were counted before nightfall. "There is possibility of recovering more by day break. We shall get you more details as the operation progresses." Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army says it has cleared seven more villages taken by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Borno in its bid to end terrorism in the North East. Col. Sani Usman, the Acting Director Army Public Relations, stated this in a statement issued in Maiduguri on Sunday. "As the ongoing clearance and rescue operations gained momentum, troops of 28 Task Force Brigade have successfully cleared enclaves of Boko Haram terrorists along Galtha Baba, Galtha Musa, Bulakurma, Shatimari, Chukruk, Bulangaje, and Disa villages. "During the operation, one Boko Haram terrorist was captured alive," Usman said. According to him, three motorcycles, bags of grains, terrorists' flags and uniforms have also been recovered. He listed other items recovered to include: suicide bomber's hijab, a cell phone and one Dane gun, as well as foodstuffs and cooking utensils." "The troops also rescued 15 persons that were held hostage by the Boko Haram terrorists in the area," Usman said. He said that unfortunately, two Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) over ran an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), but however, said the formation did not sustain any human casualty as the damage to the AFVs was minimal. The spokesman said that the captured terrorist was being interrogated and would soon be handed over to the relevant agencies for prosecution."
How can any government declare a war over when the enemy is controlling parts of its territory? Aduba
