I have found out that after imbibing much of European culture, you start to condemn your own. Some of the examples sited by Dr. Abati do not amount to corruption. They are good old Yoruba cultural ways of relating to one another. If a man's wife has a baby or has just bought a new car, it is natural for a Yoruba person to say to him 'a a we o.' This is not corruption, or this is not what we are talking about when we talk about corruption. A respectable Yoruba person would just spend the few naira required to entertain his well-wishers.

You will soon see drummers, long lost relatives and touts - yes, touts - converging on your home, and demanding to be fed or given some gifts. This is us and this is not corruption.
When you go for a funeral in Nigeria, or for any type of event in Nigeria, or any part of the world, including the Great Britain or the United States, you have to hold on to your pocket, monitor your phones etc. If you think I lie, go to the Harlem or South Dallas or even main street NY to verify. In the US, particularly in the big cities, there are more murders per capita than in Nigeria. This is the fact.
You have partially identified what we talk about when talking about corruption but I will go a bit further:
1. A person is corrupt when it enables another person to be corrupt, like accepting stolen properties from a thief. As it is for individuals, so it is with nations and by this definition, Great Britain and other European countries are as corrupt as Nigeria. No European country can claim a moral high ground in this regard.
2. A person is corrupt when he seeks undue advantage from a government official. As it is for individuals, so it is with nations and a lot of European companies do this while their nations look the other way when trying to bid for contracts in Nigeria.
3. A person is corrupt if he refuses to return stolen goods after they have been identified to be stolen. As it is for individuals, so it is with nations. So the Great great Britain is more corrupt than Nigeria.
Now, for these three definitions, which do not include the many billions of African wealth stolen over the centuries by Europeans, I cannot possibly see how Great great Britain can accuse Nigeria of corruption or even attempt to preach to Africans about corruption.
4. Now, a person is corrupt is he associates with and defends a corrupt regime for any length of time without excusing himself by resigning. Now this is one of the greatest forms of corruption we are fighting in Nigeria. And everyone of us should look in the mirror and ask himself, 'Have I been in bed with corrupt people?'
