Dear Professor Falola,
As the new academic year gets underway, I’d like to share information with you about the innovative study abroad program New African Diasporas: Transnational Communities, Cultures, and Economies which is now accepting applications for Spring 2017. This semester program is part of a Title VI Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) project administered collaboratively by the School for International Training (SIT) and Morehouse College. Within a multi-country design, the curriculum provides positive, contemporary perspectives on the African diaspora by using the Murids of Senegal as the primary case study. Students will begin in Atlanta at Morehouse and then travel as a group to Senegal, Italy, and China to learn about migration, entrepreneurship, Wolof language and culture, and impact on local economies. Students will return to New York City and present their work to the Murid community there who are very supportive of this program.
The 15-credit New African Diasporas program includes the following coursework:
- Africana Muslims/4 credits
- Entrepreneurship and Migration/4 credits
- Wolof/3 credits
- New African Diasporas: Frameworks and Fieldwork/4 credits
SIT is committed to making this program accessible to a wide range of students. SIT scholarships, including the SIT Pell Grant Match and HBCU Scholarship, are applicable to the program, along with substantial funding specifically for New African Diasporas.
Please find more information on the SIT Study Abroad website here: http://studyabroad.sit.edu/programs/semester/spring-2017/adp/ and do not hesitate to contact either of us for more information or if you have a student who is interested in applying.
