New Membership Features for 2017 Dear IPSA member, We are glad to announce important new features of the IPSA membership for the upcoming year. Creation of the Global South Membership Category Starting on October 1st 2016, every resident of a low and lower middle income country [1] to complete an IPSA membership will be given access to a new membership category called the Global South Membership. This new category will help IPSA fill its mandate to be inclusive, globally present and to develop political science in the whole world by allowing more of our colleagues from the Global South to join our international community of political scientists by drastically reducing their membership fees. The rates of the Global South Membership will be as follow: Global South Membership 2017-2018 Regular 2-years - US$80 Senior 2-years - US$30 Student 1-year - US$5 Student 2-years - US$10 These rates represent significant discounts, reaching up from 53% to 89% discount off the regular membership price. Here is the list of countries that will benefit from the Global South Membership for 2017: Afghanistan Armenia Bangladesh Benin Bhutan Bolivia Burkina Faso Burundi Cape Verde Cambodia Cameroon Central African Republic Chad Comoros Congo (Brazzaville) Congo (Kinshasa) Djibouti Egypt El Salvador Eritrea Ethiopia Gambia Ghana Guatemala Guinea Guinea-Bissau Haiti | Honduras India Indonesia Ivory Coast Kenya Kiribati Kosovo Kyrgyzstan Laos Lesotho Liberia Madagascar Malawi Mali Mauritania Micronesia Moldova Mongolia Morocco Mozambique Myanmar Nepal Nicaragua Niger Nigeria North Korea Pakistan | Papua New Guinea Philippines Rwanda Samoa Sao Tome and Principe Senegal Sierra Leone Solomon Islands Somalia Sudan Sri Lanka Sudan Swaziland Syria Tajikistan Tanzania Togo Tonga Tunisia Uganda Ukraine Uzbekistan Vanuatu Vietnam Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe | This list will be adjusted at the beginning of every year to follow the updates of the World Bank's lists. We sincerely hope that academics from these countries will take advantage from the incentives in place to join our international community of political scientists. Please help share the good news with your networks! Freeze on Regular Membership Fees Creating the Global South Membership category certainly does not come cheap. We could have opted to raise regular membership fees to finance this endeavour ‒ IPSA periodically raises membership fees to adjust to inflation or to finance a particular project beneficial to its membership. The last membership fee adjustment dates from 2015, when it was raised to adjust to inflation and to finance IPSA's new online publication, World Political Science (WPS), which was added to member's benefits. Usually, these raises are of around US$5-US$10. This time, in an effort to improve and maintain accessibility to our membership for all, we decided to review and rationalize our expenses instead of handing you the bill. We have carefully reconsidered all our expenses related to membership and targeted some practices we deemed needed modernization. Removing the Print Version of International Political Science Review (IPSR) from the Membership Package While reviewing IPSA membership expenses, the very expensive and ever growing printing and shipping costs of journals stood out. With the goal of reducing expenses wherever possible and according with modern policies that align the association with environmental sustainability, IPSA decided to encourage members to turn towards a more up to date and environmentally friendly option: the online version of International Political Science Review (IPSR). Accordingly, in order to encourage our members to access our publications online, the print version of the IPSR will be removed from the membership package and offered as an extra service, as it is currently the practice with other IPSA publications ‒ namely the International Political Science Abstracts and the World Political Science. Getting the print version of IPSR will now cost an extra 10$ per year atop all membership categories (except lifetime members, whom will keep receiving the print copies). We believe this amount to be extremely low in comparison to all the other publications on the market. We see it as a small insensitive for members to opt for the online version, without penalizing those who really want/need the print version. And, remember, these savings and revenues will be used to finance the new Global South Membership category and attenuate the financial impact of the freeze on regular membership fees. Going forward... Because many of you already bought a membership for the year 2017 and expect to receive the print issue for free (as it was sold before), we have planned a transition period. Therefore, every IPSA member who acquired a 2017 membership before October 1 2016 will have the option to receive or not the IPSR 2017 printed issues. The question is then simple: please ask yourself, if you really need the print version when the online version is available? We invite you to visit your IPSA online profile and click on the tab " Modify my Profile"; at the bottom of the page you will be able to choose if you wish to receive or not the printed issue of IPSR for the year 2017. You have until September 30 to make a choice. After that date, the option will no longer be available and the 2017 print issues will only be sent to those who chose to receive it before the deadline and, of course, to those who made the choice to receive it while renewing their membership. In order to reach our goal of financing the new Global South Membership category, reducing printing and shipping costs, attenuating the financial impact of the membership fee freeze and supporting sound environmental practices, we strongly encourage you to opt for the online version of IPSR. Thank you very much, International Political Science Association 1590, av. Docteur-Penfield, bureau 333 Montréal (Québec) H3G 1C5 Canada [1] According to the World Bank statistics on gross National Income (GNI) per capita, Atlas method. |
