That's the realist, Kissinger, at his best. I think that President Obama has reached the same conclusion. We might note that under the Obama Doctrine, the United States is not under any obligation, to bring about a conclusive result, on its own. That is a wise position to take, especially under a neorealist (Waltz, 1978) strategy, which modifies the realist idea that states must continually expand their power, in order to deal with their environment, which is defined by anarchy.
Neorealism accepts the importance of power but insists that states do not seek power for its own sake. They seek power to enhance their security. Under the neorealist model, the Obama Doctrine and the way it has helped the United States, to properly calibrate its responses to the Syria crisis: a crisis that has been raging within that Russian ally's territory has been a very good achievement in Real Politik.
