USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: [Naijaintellects] #2: [africanworldforum] Supreme Court Justice Okoro releases bombshell letter accusing Amaechi and Umana of trying to bribe him - The ScoopNG

The Ghost Nebukadineze Adiele:

Did you say you are a lawyer - and you are lying so outrightly?

and then in your reply, you gave this link  (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/outright

as being what I gave.  Haba!  Why lie so stubbornly?

As to using "outrightly" in a sentence,  I know, I know, you get your "word is correct, word is not correct" from Naira-land:

QUOTE

ola olabiy:

Surprise! Surprise!
Before I go to bed, let me surprise you all. Yeah, you all! At least most of you.
Even journalists and teachers/lecturers of English make this mistake.

So, what is the word?
And the word is:

OUTRIGHTLY. Yes, outrightly! Wrong! Very wrong!

Did you know that this is NOT a word?

OUTRIGHT: an adjective
OUTRIGHT: an adverb.
Thus, 'outrightly' is unEnglish.

Incorrect: Neither candidate won outrightly.
Correct version: Neither candidate won outright.

It works exactly like 'fast'. Not 'fastly'.

Got my drift?

I will 'surprise' you with a 'bigger surprise' in the next 24 hours.

Stay glued. grin grin grin

UNQUOTE

and then run with it!  The Olabiyi guy - and your stubbornly-ghostly self -  forgets that

Correct is:  Neither candidate outrightly won

Silly fellow(s)!

And there you have it.

Fired VC Aluko,
"Outrightly" is a grammatically wrong word, period! Outright is already an adverb (in addition to being an adjective, depending on usage), so it is wrong to make it more adverbial by adding extra "ly" . "Outrightly" is as grammatically egregious as "irregardless", yet if you google irregardless, you will see it in the same light as you see "outrightly".

If you were not kidding with us, you would have noticed that even the links you gave (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/outright) did neither define "outrightly" nor use it in any sentence -- they defined and used "outright".

You should have stopped at your more honorable and understandable explanation of "I do allow Nigerian colloquialism to enter into my vocabulary episodically, but I make absolutely no apologies for that since I am writing LARGELY among Nigerians who would understand what I am writing, in a forum which is not necessarily scholarly."  I thought that was what you were doing the first time I read you write "outrightly" but it kept coming, coming, and coming...Instead of thanking me, the Donald Trump in you called me a "Ghost". If you find Trump despicable, then be reminded that you aped him by calling me names for pointing out a legitimate error of yours.

The Ghost Nebukadineze Adiele:

I was alarmed when you almost "grammatically de-erudified" me by claiming that the word "outrightly" does not exist in English.  I would NOT have been surprised IF it did not exist, because honestly, I do allow Nigerian colloquialism to enter into my vocabulary episodically, but I make absolutely no apologies for that since I am writing LARGELY among Nigerians who would understand what I am writing, in a forum which is not necessarily scholarly.  With so many people calling each other "idiots" around here, there must be some medical proofs of such conditions, so why exercise myself so much in checking up every single word or phrase in the Queen's English English dictionary, when we have our own Nigerian English dictionary, which expands with each new (and understandable) usage?

But the fact of the matter is that the word exists in the English English dictionary:

See for example:

It is one of several adverbs in the English language where adding a prefix or a suffix to it does not change its meaning - or actually REINFORCES it.

        Outright - outright-ly
        Valuable - in-valuable

etc.

So what say you now?

I would not know you to be honorable enough to apologize....but come on, disappoint your fans, who must have by now pointed out your boo-boo, and are waiting for me to smack you in your ghostly mouth!

But I am not in a foul mood at all!

And there you have it.

The above is one of the reasons that I have come to the conclusion that this Peter Claver Oparammuo is not just dumb, but he might also be a thief. A thief says any and everything without any shred of shame or conscience. In any nation worthy of being called a nation, a Justice of the Supreme Court's words MUST be taken at their face value until impeached by impeccable evidence. It is only an imbecile (apology to Dele Lawal) that would assert that a man who sits at the highest court of the land (and the court of finality of judicial processes) must produce immediate evidence backing up his claim that XYZ visited him. What nation seats a person whose words need immediate backing up evidence on its Supreme Court?

Either Peter Claver Oparammuo (again he is never to be confused with my brother, Peter Opara of Boston, the Ogbuonyeiro I of Igboland) severely retarded or he is willfully saying something abhorently stupid. He doubts a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria's words but believes the words of lowly DSS agents and lowly political appointees at the presidency? Is this not a mark of idiocy? Do you see how Nigerians destroy institutions for partisan politicking or for ass kissing sake?

Let me make it clear before some idiot distorts my mission here. I am not opposed to arresting judges and Justices if probable causes of corruption exist for their arrest. I am, however, opposed to using corrupt and unlawful means to fighting corruption. I hailed the arrests of these judges and Justices initially because I thought there existed actual sting operations that led to probable causes, but their comments since their arrests have given me a reason for concern -- that they may actually be victims of a vengeful presidency and a corrupt APC over the electoral tribunals' outcomes.

I do not want to fault the DSS yet for arresting these jurists, but if I was forced to choose between the words of the DSS and those of the jurists, I would choose those of the jurists for this reason: I have listened to president Buhari state, twice at least, that he knowingly and willingly arrested people who might have been innocent in 1984 and then tasked them to prove their innocence (he added that he could not do so now in a democracy). When he was committing those crimes against humanity in 1984, he used the then NSO, which acted in the same jackbooted fashion as the DSS of today. NSO was so brutal and lawless that Ibrahim Babangida, upon overthrowing HoS Buhari in 1985 and on his maiden address to the nation, told Nigerians that NSO was evil and would be restructured (SSS or DSS is an offshoot of a disbanded NSO).

Since Buhari is president today and DSS acts like its father (NSO) with which General Buhari violated human rights three decades ago, commonsense must dictate to any rational, honest, and properly educated person that DSS words cannot be accepted over those of the Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, notwithstanding that they are alleged to have accepted bribes.

The problem with Nigeria is that lots our people are dumb, forget easily, find it difficult to put 2 and 2 together, worship the leader instead of institutions, and lie like Lucifer's leprous offspring. Among Nigerians, weaker solutions usually overwhelm the stronger solutions. For example, this Peter Claver Oparammuo is thoughtless, but the hitherto grammatically erudite Bolaji Aluko is aping his despicable thoughtlessness. I have twice read Bolaji Aluko PhD write  "outrightly" in his sentences. Come on now, am I supposed to believe that a former Vice Chancellor and a professor of almost three decades running does not know that no such word exists in the English language? Of course not, Bolaji Aluko is being a Nigerian by allowing the weaker solution of Peter Claver Oparammuo to dilute him. Bolaji writes "outrightly" because a borderline bum, Peter Claver Oparammuo writes it frequently and illiterately.

In making the cases against the judges and Justices, the DSS is not being stellar or even convincing, yet most Nigerians have taken their words over those of the Justices of the Courts of the land. That's not the way it should be in any civilized nation -- DSS evidence must be exceptionally overwhelming for these fellows' words to not be believed on face value.

Yes, I am for fighting corruption and arresting of judges and Justices, but I am vehemently against deploying corrupt methods to carrying out such fights. President Buhari and NSO's (DSS' father) antecedent with human right violation makes any questioning of their current method worthy of worrying about and scrutinizing to the last dot. Folks who pay attention to a thoughtless, treacherous, and sycophantic Peter Claver Oparammuo will do nothing to themselves but disgrace.

Afis,

Na wa o. This Okoro Iyang cock and bull story is another desperate straw a drowning corrupt judge hopes he will employ to save his neck from the just rewards of his shady deals. A whole Supreme Court judge telling of a visit without backing up with even one shred of evidence tells of the wreck our judiciary has become with these unscrupulous vermin. I believe he meant his fairy tales for the distressed wailing wailers and they have lapped up to it with such ravishing appetite as they have been doing to their endless follies is de the anti corruption war started.

The above is solid and Valid. Something is not kosher in his stories!
Maybe Justice Igbo Okoro is known as Mr Dirty Money, that was why he wasn't picked?

CJN did not choose the panel based on Mr Dirty Money's verbal accusation or lamentation.
Ruling of February 3rd is too close to the day he claimed he notified the CJN.
Appeal panel would have been picked before then.
One has nothing to do with the other.

Joe Attueyi:

I read through the letter by Justice Okoro - so let me litigate it, starting from the paragraph of his belief of why he is being persecuted.

Those are the damning paragraphs concerning Minister Amaechi's and Umana Umana's visits to the Justice,  a damning testament of the Justice's fitness for office, as well as that of the CJN if the Justice's "testimony" is to be believed.

This Justice's letter was written October 17, 2016 - after his home was raided.  According to him, he "verbally"  reported to the CJN, the Minister's clandestine visit to him on February 1 - eight-and-a-half months ago.  The Justice  does not write that "I remember that you denied that he visited you....", meaning that in fact the Minister must INDEED have ALSO visited the CJN on the matter.

Is it NOT a crime for a person to ATTEMPT to bribe a high official - and a crime that you don't report it, so that the attempted briber can be prosecuted? If the CJN of a country, and a Justice of the Supreme Court are attempted to be bribed, and they do not report it, what THE HECK of a country, what the heck of a Judiciary, do we have here?

Before going on, let us set the scene with respect to Akwa Ibom Gubernatorial Election:

     -  Saturday, April 11, 2015; Akwa Ibom Gubernatorial Election held; Gov. Udom of PDP is declared winner

     -  Wednesday, October 21, 2015: Election Tribunal (Chairman Justice Sadiq Umar of a 3-man panel) orders re-run in 18 of 31 LGAs; leaves Udom in place amidst controversy;

     -  Friday, December 18, 2015: Gov. Udom's election is completely nullified by the 5-man Election Appeal Court

     -  Wednesday, February 3, 2016: Gov. Udom is reinstated as Governor by the 7-man Supreme Court Election Appeal by a Summary
Judgment.  The Court is led by CJH Mahmud Mohammed

     -  Monday, February 15, 2016:  Supreme Court (through Justice Chima Nweze) gives its reasons for its February 3 judgment

The paragraph goes further about the Justice's happiness in being mercifully left out by the CJN from the Akwa Ibom Supreme Court Election Appeal panel.   But if the ruling was on February 3, why is it that it is ONLY on February 1 (two days earlier) he is telling the CJN about Amaechi's visit?
