LAW TO PROTECT WILD ANIMALS CONSIDERED MORE IMPORTANT THAN DISABILITY BILL.
http://punchng.com/buhari-signs-endangered-species-control-bill-law/
The 17th and last bill of the year 2016 signed into law considered protection of wild animals important than disability bills!
Since democracy returns to our shore in 1999, people living with disabilities have been agitating for a bill to help improved their welfare and living conditions. Under ex Presidents -Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, the bill was left unsigned after it was harmonised by both chambers of legislature.
As soon as President Muhammadu Buhari was inagurated, the bill was sent back to the National Assembly. It was quickly passed by the Senate in October and since then, we have been waiting for the President to assent the bill. The entire disability community were shocked to read that a law protecting wild animals was signed instead of disability law.
From 1960 till date Nigeria has no enabling law for persons living with disabilities. Though some states in Nigeria including Plateau, Lagos, Bauchi, Ogun and Ekiti states passed disability law, implementation is another issue. The United Nations Committee on Rights of People with Disabilities (UN CRPD) enjoined states to passed the law with a commission to implement the law.
We are awaiting the signing of this law with creation of a Disability Commission or a Disability Affairs Ministry to implement it. As it seems now, we are desperately praying that the President didn't disappoint like his predecessors. Moreover, we are not comfortable with the feeling that it may be the last bill to be signed when he's at the tether end of his tenure in 2019 simply because they are telling us everytime that Nigeria has no funds to set up a disability commission.
We believe like Professor Albert Camus famously penned it that "real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present" and that present is now. Please, President Muhammadu Buhari, sign this law and let posterity write your name in the hearts of Nigerians with disabilities.
