PEP-FAR is under attack!

1. Potential reduction of remittances to Africa and the Caribbean-  if T's  statement  on Mexican remittances, on the campaign trail,  holds.

Negative economic effects on Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal , Jamaica  ...... and  countries with large populations in the US.

2. Potential loss of jobs for people with permanent residence from these regions; Job insecurity. Returnees could spark entrepreneurial programs at home  and introduce new skills, however.

3.  Deterioration of the climate for "minorities" in general, within the US.;  Complete end of affirmative action  programs. Prioritization of certain ethnicities. Undermining of laws against gender discrimination.

4.   Consolidation in  Africa of the racist  wing of the  rightwing Christian evangelicals ,   their toxic bigotry, and their neo-colonial missionary agenda. Spread of   emboldened Jihadist  terrorist groups within Africa;  Heightened religious tension.

5. End of AGOA, and the  consolidation of full blown protectionism,  undermining the jobs that emanated from AGOA. Growth of an inward-looking Africa  in some areas,   and greater cooperation with China in others.

6. Cosy relationship with African dictators and the consolidation of dictatorship within Africa,  but this could also spur resistance movements.

8. T.  threatened to seize Iraq oil.........Risks to  regions in Africa  in the event of US involvement in crisis management. Greater determination to  keep out "the world's policeman" may follow in some regions .

9.  Withdrawal of funds from the UN,   and  the undermining of assistance to Africa of  UNICEF, Refugee programs, programs  related to the environment etc.Limited assistance in pandemics etc. Shift of the UN to Beijing?

10. Increased  detention of immigrants  and spread of detention centers; the  entrenchment of a punitive culture of incarceration and police brutality, that have often affected minorities. Resistance movements.

Some of these are not   inevitable,  given the vibrant show of solidarity and resistance within and across various racial, social and economic groups  - as displayed within the last two weeks. However,  a period  of internal civil unrest,  and  prolonged instability,  cannot be ruled out.
