USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: [uchunguzionline] MOUSSA FAKI MAHAMAT OF CHAD WILL ADD NO VALUE TO AU

Bro Warsama:

How is the going on the ground in Kenya? There is this stuff about suspending Diaspora registration for the election in some places?

On your headline, LET US, AU CITIZENS, GIVE HIM A CHANCE.

I listened to his presentation keenly. Is there a diamond in the rough?  I think the civil society should engage him.

Today, I chatted with the CEMAC Commissioner of Economic Affairs.....I thought and hoped he would run. O well, the candidates to fill the two remaining  slots - Economic and Social Affairs -  must come from the East (male) and Central (female) since Mr. Mahatma is a male from Central.

Call the need for more women at the helm "The AU and Africa Challenge." With Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf term-limited this year, it is a MALE SWEEP.

Any woman who wants to run, I will be her campaign guru and we shall win.....as Eneke the Bird in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart said " since men have learnt to shoot without missing, I have also learnt to fly without perching." lol.

Anyway, please don't write Mr. Mahatma off.

Subject: [uchunguzionline] MOUSSA FAKI MAHAMAT OF CHAD WILL ADD NO VALUE TO AU

What were the African Union leaders thinking of when they elected Chadian Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat on January 30, 2017 as AU Chair ?

The election of Mahamat was a clear illustration of the absence of any set criteria that candidates for the highest office in the AU are required to fulfill. Unless the highest standards possible are complied with, it is not possible for the continental organisation to live up to expectations.

Moussa Faki Mahamat is a man who comes from a very primitive governance environment structure in his home country of Chad. As such, there is no way Mahamat can add any value to the AU and the fulfillment of its lofty aspirations.

Moussa Faki Mahamat was the external face of massive impunity practiced by the corrupt regime of President Idriss Deby, his fellow Zaghawa tribesman from Northern Chad. The Deby regime has and continues to commit massive human rights abuses on a scale that will shock people in liberal African countries like Kenya where there is a modicum of respect for governance and human rights. Corruption is endemic in Chad where its practice is even worse than in Kenya.

Moussa Faki Mahamat was forced to resign as Prime Minister on 4 February, 2005, when his government could not find money to pay the salaries of civil servants because, as one Western diplomat put it, "all the money was taken to the presidential palace."

He was later on in 2008 appointed Foreign Minister and his chief job was to gloss over the excesses of his President, Idriss Deby.

Is this the man Africa is looking to lead its continental organisation for the next four years ? Though a lawyer who studied the law in Congo-Brazzaville, his mental outlook and vision are impaired by the political environment he left behind in Chad when he moved to Addis Ababa.

He cannot be expected to understand and appreciate the tenets of good governance, probity and et hical conduct. He is more at home in indulging in abuses of human rights and flagrant violations of constitutional norms.

Moussa Faki Mahamat is the last person on earth to believe in affirmative action. There are only 12 women MPs out of 188 MPs in Chadian National Assembly. Clearly, as Foreign Minister, he never promoted nor championed the rights of women in Chad. He cannot be expected to do the same now in the AU for the simple reason he doesnt know what gender empowerment is all about.
